Cognitive

Development
of a
Infants and Toddler
Motivation:

Draw the Word

1. Dividing the
class into 2
groups.
2. Choose 1
representative to
act the word.
3. Pick a folded
paper and draw the
word indicated.
4. Each group has 2
mins. to guess the
given word.
Definition of Words:
• Cognitive – understanding,
information, thinking
• Infant- a very young child; new
born baby
• Toddler- a young child who is
just learning to walk
Sensorimotor Stage
• Is the first of the four stages of
cognitive development
• In this stage, infants construct
an understanding of the world
by coordinating sensory
experiences with physical
motoric actions.
Six Sub-stages
of
Sensorimotor
Stage
1.Simple Reflex (birth – 6 weeks)
• Coordination of sensation and
action through reflexive
behaviors.
• Closing of hand when an object
touch her palm (palmar grasp)
2. First habits and primary Circular
Reactions Phase ( 6 weeks- 4 months)

• Coordination of sensation and

two types of schemes: habits
(reflex) and primary circular
reactions.
3. Secondary circular reactions phase
(4-8 months)
• Development of habits. Infants
become more object-oriented,
moving beyond self-
preoccupation repeat actions that
bring interesting.
4. Coordination of reactions stage
secondary circular ( 8-12 months )
• Coordination of vision and touch-
hand-eye coordination; of
schemes and intentionally.
• In this stage, action is directed
towards a goal.
5. Tertiary circular reactions, novelty,
and curiosity (12-18 months)
• Infants become intrigued by the
many properties of objects and by
the many things they can make
happen to objects; they
experiment with new behavior.
6. Internalization of schemes (invention of new
means through mental combination ) (18-24 months)
• Infants develop the ability to use
primitive symbols and form
enduring mental representations.
• Symbolizing the problem-solving
sequence before actually responding.
Object Permanence

• Is the understanding that objects

continue to exist even when they
cannot be seen, heard, or touched.
• What are the possible
implication when an infant is
not supposedly doing the
stages of cognitive
development?
• When does an infant
possibly recognize that
his/her actions are normal ?
• How this stages of
sensorimotor will help you to
apply on your future
career ?
