(SLEEPING BEUTY SYNDROME)
WHAT IS KLEINE-LEVIN SYNDROME?

• Extremely rare and complex neurological disorder


characterize by recurrent episodes of excessive sleep
(hypersomnia) along with cognitive and behavioral changes.

• Sleep up to 20 hours per day during an episode.

• 70% male adolescents are usually affected.

HOW TO DIAGNOSE KLEINE-LEVIN SYNDROME

• Diagnosis of KLS is often difficult and delayed.

• Medical history needs to be taken and tested.

• Refer to various specialist such as psychiatrist and


neurologist.
HOW TO TREAT KLS??

• There is no definite treatment for kleine-levin syndrome


during episode as well as interepisodic period but it can
reduce the chances of relapse by using certain medication
such us lithuim and amphetamine.

• Family members also play an important role to manage


anxieties and other disruptive behavior when the patient is
awake.
WHAT ARE THE LIKELIHOOD OF RECOVERY FOR
PEOPLE AFFECTED BY THIS DISEASE?

• In most adolescent-onset patients, symptoms cease by the


time they are 30 years old.
• A French study of 108 patients found a median duration of
13 years but a review of 186 cases found a median duration
of 8 years.
• patients who initially have frequent attacks generally see the
disease cease earlier than others.
• The condition spontaneously resolves and is considered to
be cured if there have been no symptoms for 6 years.
