THE SYLLABUS
 On the Course Outline, the number of days spent
on each unit represents a percentage of time of the
semester which is approximately equal to the
percentage that the unit will be addressed on the
AP Exam.
 We will hopefully finish the content of the course a
week before your AP Practice Exam, and begin
reviewing and reteaching.
 The Practice Exam will be worth 2 unit tests.

THE SYLLABUS
 Three days is a reasonable amount of time to
complete work missed due to an absence.
 Any assignment given prior to an absence is due
soon after the first day of the student’s return.
 Study routinely and especially before announced
quizzes and tests.
 Spend 10 minutes daily reviewing what we discussed
in class.
 It is not my general policy to offer extra credit.

THE SYLLABUS
 Quizzes will be in class. They will cover the
chapter and our class notes. Quizzes are timed. So
read before taking the quiz.
 PowerPoints in class sometimes will guide our
discussion of what has already been read by the
students.
 Class-time will be used to test terms and concepts,
and to build your portfolio of essential graphs and
equations for your notebook.

FYI: HOW TO READ YOUR TEXTBOOK

Except #3, the following suggestions are listed in your text on page 17.

1. Read before class.

You’ll get more out of class.
2. Summarize, don’t rewrite or highlight everything.
Copious notes or highlighting won’t necessarily
improve your comprehension or retention.
Instead, summarize each section in your own
words. Then, compare your summary to the one
at the end of the chapter.

3. Draw and redraw graphs.
Practice drawing graphs to represent economic
behaviors. Explain to others the graphs. This will lead
to better recognition and understanding of graphs you
will encounter.
4. Test yourself.
Try the “Quick Quiz” that follows each section before
moving on to the next section.
Write your answers down, compare them to the answers
in the back of the book. If your answers are incorrect,
review the section before moving on.

5. Practice, practice, practice.

Work through the end-of-chapter review questions
and problems. They are often good practice for the
exams. And the more you use your new knowledge,
the more solid it will become.

6. Go online.
Besides my website, https://economicsbycort.weebly.com,
search YouTube for videos that explain individual
concepts. I have linked to some of the best on YouTube in
my Resources page on my website.
7. Study in groups.
Get together with a few classmates to review each chapter,
quiz each other, and help each other understand the
material. A group of 3 is optimal.

8. Teach someone.
The best way to learn something is to teach it to someone
else, such as a study partner or friend.
9. Don’t skip the real world examples.
Read the Case Studies and “In The News” boxes in each
chapter. They will help you see how the new terms,
concepts, models, and graphs apply to the real world. As
you read the newspaper or watch the evening news, see if
you can find the connections with what you’re learning in
the textbook.
