UNIT 2 -

COMPETITIONS
GERUND
LLIKES, DISLIKES
GERUND
 Gerunds are words that are formed with verbs but
act as nouns. They’re very easy to spot, since
every gerund is a verb with ing tacked to its tail.
 Present participles do not act as nouns. Instead,
they act as modifiers or complete progressive
verbs. To find gerunds in sentences, just look for a
verb + ing that is used as a noun.
Examples of Gerunds
 Swimming in the ocean has been Sharon’s passion
since she was five years old.
 Let’s go dancing at the club tonight.
 I’ve been dreaming of summer all winter long.
 Holly decided that flying above the clouds was the
most incredible experience she’d ever had.
EXPRESSING LIKES AND
DISLIKES
 Use the verb "to like", when you talk about things
that you enjoy doing:
 I like playing tennis.
 You like going out to clubs.
 He likes riding his bike.
 We like going to the cinema.
 They like watching TV.
 Instead of the verb like, you can also use the
following verbs:to enjoy
 to love
 to prefer
 Note: They all require the ing-form:
 He likes running.
 He enjoys running.
 He loves running.
 He prefers running.
 The opposite of "to like" is "to dislike". It also requires
the ing-form of the following verb: He likes running
but he dislikes swimming.
 Instead of the verb dislike, you can also use the
following verbs: to hate:
 They hate playing boardgames.
 can't stand: She can't stand listening to country music.
 can't bear: He can't bear being alone.
 Of course, you can also negate the verb to like instead
of using a different verb:
 They don't like playing boardgames.
 She doesn't like listening to country music.
 He doesn't like being alone.
LET’S PRACTICE
 Complete the sentences with the ing-form of the verb in
brackets. For example: He likes _____ (play the
guitar).  He likes playing the guitar.

  They don't like ________ (cook).
 He doesn't like _______ (talk on the phone).
 He likes ________ (read magazines).
 They like __________ (go to restaurants).
 She likes __________ (watch films).
 She doesn't like __________ (be on the computer).
