The Impact of the Internet
• All: All: Identify some protocols that are used on the
Internet.

and negative changes caused by the Internet.
• Some: Explain the role that ‘fake news’ can have.

The Internet is NOT the World Wide Web. The Internet is a large network of
computers that can run different protocols that let users share data.

• HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol) – Runs the World Wide Web.
• XMPP (Extensible Messaging Presence Protocol) – Runs messenger
services like WhatsApp
• VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) – Runs voice call services like Skype
• FTP (File Transfer Protocol) – lets you upload large files.
• IMAP (Internet Message Across Protocol) – Runs email services like
Gmail.
TASK: STRETCH:
Write a description of the protocols down in Can you think of specific tasks you have used
your words in MS WORD these protocols for?
Has the Internet made us smarter?
When the Internet was first introduced many people thought it would lead to a
smarter and more informed public. When everyone has access to an encyclopedia
in their pocket – surely people would make better choices?
It hasn’t worked out like that.
In fact, in many ways the Internet, by undermining traditional newspapers and
news television, has encouraged people to believe all sorts of stories that are not
true. This is the so-called ‘fake news’ that people talk about.

paying for adverts on social

wasn’t allowed).

Russian organisations that may
have been trying to help Trump.

Create a PowerPoint to present to the class describing


what you have found and explaining who you think
might have made it and what they hoped to achieve!
Warning: Make sure you are reading reliable websites
from well respected newspapers and television
channels – do not fall victim to fake news when
researching fake news!!!
