Fuel Injection System

 Definition

 Why we use fuel injection system?

 Carburetor Limitations
Types of Petrol Injection System:

According to the location of Injector

 Direct Injection
 In Direct/Port Injection
Direct Injection

With direct injection engines, fuel is squirted directly into the

combustion chamber instead of hanging out in the air intake
manifold.

InDirect Injection

Indirect injection in an internal combustion engine is fuel

injection where fuel is not directly injected into the combustion
chamber. Gasoline engines equipped with indirect injection
systems, wherein a fuel injector delivers the fuel at some point
before the intake valve, have mostly fallen out of favor to direct
injection.
Types of Petrol Injection System:

According to Duration and Timing of Fuel Injection

1. Continuous Injection
2. Sequential Injection
According to Duration and Timing of Fuel Injection

1. Continuous Injection:
In continous injection system, fuel is sprayed at low pressure
continuous in air supply.
The quantity of fuel is controlled by air throttle opening and no
timing device is used.
Sequential fuel injection

Sequential fuel injection, also called sequential port fuel injection (SPFI) or
timed injection, is a type of multiport injection. Though basic MPFI employs
multiple injectors, they all spray their fuel at the same time or in groups.
Timed like spark plugs, they spray the fuel immediately before or as their
intake valve opens.
Types of Petrol Injection System:

 According to number of Injectors

 Single Point Injection
 Multi-Point Injection
Single-point or throttle body injection

The earliest and simplest type of fuel injection, single-point simply

replaces the carburetor with one or two fuel-injector nozzles in the
throttle body, which is the throat of the engine’s air intake manifold.
For some automakers, single-point injection was a stepping stone
to the more complex multipoint system.
Port or multipoint fuel injection

Multipoint fuel injection devotes a separate injector nozzle to each

cylinder, right outside its intake port, which is why the system is
sometimes called port injection. Shooting the fuel vapor this close to the
intake port almost ensures that it will be drawn completely into the
cylinder.
Types of Petrol Injection System:

 According to the control Method

▪ Mechanical Petrol Injection Method
▪ Electronic Petrol Injection Method
Mechanical Petrol Injection:

This type of injection is operated Mechanically with the help of a

Pump, distributor, etc.The Mechanical Petrol Injection pump is
obsolete now and it is been replaced by Electronic Petrol Injection
Pump so that a higher accuracy is maintained w.r.t. the fuel during
the firing order.
A Petrol Injection System consists of the following parts:

 Fuel Tank
 Fuel Filter
 Pressure Pump
 Relief Valve
 Return Pipe for Excess fuel
 Distributor
 Injector
 Air Filter
 Throttle Valve
 Engine Cylinder

Electronic Petrol Injection:

 In the mechanical injection system, there are some limitations, but

in the case of the Electronic Petrol Injection system, we can
overcome that. By the use of Sensors, and Electronic Unit we can
easily control functions like engine speed, temperature, engine
load, torque and much more.
