LAW OF
INTERACTION
“For every action there is
an equal and opposite
reaction.”
What does this mean?

For every force acting on

an object, there is an equal
force acting in the opposite
direction.

5
Right now, gravity is pulling you down
in your seat, but Newton’s Third Law says
your seat is pushing up against you.
This is why you are not
moving. The gravity is pulling you
down, your seat pushing up.

6
Opposite
direction
7
Newton’s third law describes the relationship
between two forces in an interaction.

One force is called the action force.

The other force is called the
reaction force.
Neither force exists without the
other.
They are equal in strength and
opposite in direction.
They occur at the same time
8
Think about it . . .
What happens if you You slide in the
are standing on a opposite direction
skateboard or a (away from the wall),
slippery floor and because you pushed
push against a wall?
on the wall but the
wall pushed back on
you with equal and
opposite force.

9
Why does it When your toe
hurt so much exerts a force on a
rock, the rock exerts
when you an equal force back on
your toe. The harder
stub your toe you hit your toe
on a rock? against it, the more
force the rock exerts
back on your toe (and
the more your toe
hurts).
10
When you push on the wall, the wall pushes on you.

11
When the girl jumps to shore, the boat moves backward.

12
If you hit the wall, it will hit you equally hard.

Identifying Action and Reaction Force

To identify a pair of action-

reaction forces, first identify
the interacting objects A and B,
and if the action is A on B, the
reaction is B on A.

15
The action and reaction forces are stated
in the form:

Action: Object A exerts a

force on object B.
Reaction: Object B exerts
a force on
object A.
16
Reaction: road pushes on tires Action: tires push on road
18
19
Reaction: gases push on rocket

Action: rocket pushes on gases

✘ Balloon
✘ Plastic tape
✘ Straw
✘ Stopwatch

26
PROCEDURE
1. Blow up the balloon half way with air and
hold the open end shut. Record balloons
length.
2. Thread the string through the drinking
straw. Tape the long side of the balloon
along the length of the straw.
3. Hold the balloon-straw system at one end
of the string, closest to the wall.
4. Release the balloon opening. Record your
27 observations in data table I.
5. Blow up the balloon and repeat
steps 3 and 4 for a total of three
trials.
6. Now blow up the balloon full of air,
without popping it, and fill out the
data table II.
7. Record the balloons length.

HOW DO BIRDS

FLY?
Birds depend on the
Newton’s 3rd law of
motion.

36
As the birds push
down on the air with
their wings, the air
pushes their wings up
and gives them lift.

37
The wings of the bird of a
bird push air downwards. In
return, the air reacts by
pushing the bird upwards.
Action-reaction force pairs
make it possible for birds to fly.

This means that you can:

● Resize them without losing quality.
● Change fill color and opacity.

Isn’t that nice? :)
