LAW OF
INTERACTION
“For every action there is
an equal and opposite
reaction.”
What does this mean?
5
Right now, gravity is pulling you down
in your seat, but Newton’s Third Law says
your seat is pushing up against you.
This is why you are not
moving. The gravity is pulling you
down, your seat pushing up.

7
Newton’s third law describes the relationship
between two forces in an interaction.
9
Why does it When your toe
hurt so much exerts a force on a
rock, the rock exerts
when you an equal force back on
your toe. The harder
stub your toe you hit your toe
on a rock? against it, the more
force the rock exerts
back on your toe (and
the more your toe
hurts).
10
When you push on the wall, the wall pushes on you.
11
When the girl jumps to shore, the boat moves backward.
12
If you hit the wall, it will hit you equally hard.

PROCEDURE
1. Blow up the balloon half way with air and
hold the open end shut. Record balloons
length.
2. Thread the string through the drinking
straw. Tape the long side of the balloon
along the length of the straw.
3. Hold the balloon-straw system at one end
of the string, closest to the wall.
4. Release the balloon opening. Record your
27 observations in data table I.
5. Blow up the balloon and repeat
steps 3 and 4 for a total of three
trials.
6. Now blow up the balloon full of air,
without popping it, and fill out the
data table II.
7. Record the balloons length.

HOW DO BIRDS
FLY?
Birds depend on the
Newton’s 3rd law of
motion.
36
As the birds push
down on the air with
their wings, the air
pushes their wings up
and gives them lift.
37
The wings of the bird of a
bird push air downwards. In
return, the air reacts by
pushing the bird upwards.
Action-reaction force pairs
make it possible for birds to fly.
