LEGAL AND SAFETY

RISKS OF CARRYING A
KNIFE
By: Krish Ananth of 8B7
OBJECTIVE:
• To know and understand the law relating to carrying a knife (In the UAE).
• To know the safety risks of carrying a knife.
LEGAL RISK
In the UAE, the line of the legality of carrying knives in public is very blurry,
especially of its for self defense. Courts can prosecute those who possess and
carry a knife, as it is a risk to the public. In the topic of self defense, people
should defend yourself as a last resort and if the situation quickly rises, like being
kidnapped or assaulted. Then they may defend yourself by any means from the
agressor, not just with a knife. Though, the court may prosecute the person
defending themselves if they deem the self defense uneccesary, especially if it
results in a death.

It is illegal to possess weapons, even for self defense, this applies to pepper
sprays, small weapons etc. The court can also persecute those possess a knife
with no valid reason.
SAFETY RISK
As for safety, depending on the blade and opening mechanism, some are riskier
than others. You can stab or cut yourself with a pocket knife if the open
mechanism is faulty or is pressed on accident. It can also harm others,
especially young children if left unattended.

Example of a Pocket Knife:

TASK:
1. If you were in a situation where you’re being kidnapped and you have no
tools or weapons to defend yourself with, write in detail what’d you do to
defend yourself?
2. If you were aware that someone was carrying a knife in public and wanted
to hurt you or someone else, what’d you do to prevent it?
