Source Moving Towards Observer

f o  f s  .

Source Moving

 v 
f o  f s  .
 v v s 

In the above equation –vs is used when the source

moves towards the observer. This makes sense
because the observed frequency is expected to
increase as the source moves towards the observer.
When the source moves away from the observer, +vs
is used.
Moving Observer

 v  vo 
fo  fs  .
 v 
In the above equation +vo is used when the observer
moves towards the source and –vo is used when the
observer moves away from the source.
Doppler Effect
General Case
 v  vo 
f o  f s  .
 v v s 
+vo is used when the observer moves towards the source,
–vo is used when the observer moves away from the source,
–vs is used when the source moves towards the observer, and
+vs is used when the source moves away from the observer.
