Conditions for Equilibrium

• For an object to be in equilibrium two things must apply:

• 1) The principle of moments must apply.

• The principle of moments states that for equilibrium, the sum of the
moments in the clockwise direction equals the sum of the moments
in the anticlockwise direction.

Σ Anticlockwise moments = Σ Clockwise moments

2)  the sum of forces in one direction must equal the sum
of forces in the opposite direction.
Levers
N. Alexander 2021
Objectives: Students should be able to:
• State what a lever is;
• Give examples of common tools and devices as levers;
• explain the action of common tools and devices as levers;
• Identify load effort and fulcrum for each device/tool
What is a lever?
• Common tools and levers use the principle of moments to work.

• A lever is any device that can turn about a pivot.  In a lever, a force
(or effort) is used to overcome a load
Identifying the Force/load , effort and
fulcrum/pivot
Here is another example
Now its your turn! Identify this device and the
load, fulcrum and effort
Look up 3 OTHER levers and identify their
load, effort and fulcrum.
