ORIGIN
- Sikh Disciple or Learner
- Kali Yuga (dark ages) and loss of connection with God

FOUNDER OF SIKHISM
- Guru Nanak (1469 – 1539) Lahore, Punjab.
- Realization of God at the age of 30.
- Everyone is equal, should not be interested in labels.
- 20 years journey, finally settled at the bank of Ravi.
- Guru Nanak’s message: everyone’s faith must be
respected, judge by deeds, human rights, equality, criticize
increasing sectarianism.
- After death argument between Hindus and Muslims.

HISTORY
Sikhism and Mughal Empire
Relationship with Akbar(1555-1605):
- Sikh community enjoyed peace and tolerance.
- Guru Ram Das 4th Guru (1534-1581)
- Akbar granted him the land and small lake eventually became Amritsar.
Relationship with Jahangir:
-Guru Arjan 5th Guru
- Jahangir became aggressive with Sikhs
- Guru Arjan built Golden Temple in the center of great lake in Amritsar
- Jahangir killed Guru Arjan in 1606. Results in conflicts with Mughals for many generations.

Relationship with Shah Jahan:
- Guru Har Gobind 6th Guru began his Guruship at 11.
- Determined to resist any threat to Sikh community
- Moved his power based to hills of Punjab
- Militarization of Sikh community
-Fought several battles with Shah Jahan
Relationship with Aurangzeb:
-Aurangzeb increases political pressure on Sikhs
- In 1664, Guru Tegh Bahadur 9th Guru rallied his army and fought many battles with forces of
Aurangzeb

- In 1665, Aurangzeb killed him in public
- 10th Guru Gobind Singh began his Guruship at the age of 9
- He was strongest Guru after Guru Nanak
- He raised largest Sikh army
- Left two legacies: Guru Granth sahib and khalsa force
- He died in 1708.

Anglo- Sikh war(1845-1846)
Sikh kingdom was expanded and consolidated by Ranjith Singh during 19 th century. British also
advanced the borders of Punjab.
Ranjith Singh maintained a varied friend ship with British and gave some Territories south of Sutlej
river.
In the same time Ranjith increased the Military forces and waged war with Afghans.
He includes Americans, European, Hindus and Muslims to train his artillery and military.
The disunity among Afghans made Ranjith Singh to capture Peshawar, Multan, and incorporated J&K
into his kingdom
He died in 1839.

Holy book of Sikhs: The Guru Granth Sahib (the holy book of Sikh) is made up of
teachings and wisdom for Sikhs to follow.

3 RULES OF SIKHISM
- Naam Japna: Remembering God through meditation all times of day and night
during each and every activity.
- Kirat Karo: Earning a livelihood by means of earnest, honest efforts and
endeavors:
- Vand Chakko: Selflessly serving others, sharing income and resources including
foodstuffs or other goods.
The five Ks:
- Kesh (uncut hair)
- Kara (a steel bracelet)
- Kanga (a wooden comb)
- Kaccha, Kachh, Kachera (cotton underwear)
