DISCO THE BEE GEES


 The 1970's saw the rise of another form
of pop music known as “disco”. Disco m
usic pertained to rock music that was mo
re danceable , thus leading to the establis
hment of venues for public dancing also
called discos. The term originated from t
he French word “discotheque” which me
ans a library for phonograph records.

The disco style had a soaring and reverberating


sound rhythmically controlled by a steady beat for

ease of dancing ,and accompanied strings , horns ,


 Superstras of the disco genre include The Bee Gees ; ABBA ; Donn
a Summer (“The Queen of Disco”) ;Earth , wind and Fire ; KC
and the Sunshine Band ; The Village People ; and Gloria Gayno
r , with this like Dancing Queen , Stayin'Alive ; Boogie Wonderl
and , and Hot Stuff .
POP MUSIC
 Parallel with the Disco Era, other pop music superstars continued to
emerged. Among them were Neil Sedaka (Laughter in the Rain),
Diana Ross and The Supremes (Stop in the Name of Love),
Olivia Newton John (Hopelessly Devoted to You), Stevie Wonder
(You Are The Sunshine of My Life), Elton John (Skyline
Pigeon), The Carpenters (Were Only Just Begun), and Barry
Manilow (Mandy) .
 Pop Superstars in more recent years include solo artists Celine
Dion (My Heart Will Go On), Madonna (Material Girl), Whitney
Houston (I Will Always Love You), Mariah Carey (Hero), Justine
Bieber (Justified), Britney Spears (Oops, I Did It Again), Beyonce
(Irreplaceable), Lady Gaga (Bad Romance), and Bruno Mars
(Just The Way You Are); as well as vocal group such as Boyz II
Men (Four Season Of Loneliness), The Backstreet Boys (I Want It
that way), N'Sync (This I Promie You), Destiny's Child (Survivor),
among many others .

 In the early 1980s, he became a dominant figure in Ameri
can popular music and culture.He was the first African A

MTV, such as Beat It, Billie Jean and Thriller .

for “This Is It,” a series of 50 concerts that woul
d have been held at The O2 arena in London be
ginning July 13, 2009, and aworld tour to follow
after the series of concerts. After Michael Jacks
on's death, Billboard'sentire top nine positions o
n Billboard's Top Pop Catalog Albums chart ho
used Jackson-related titles on July 1, 2009.

HIP HOP AND RAP
 Hip hop music is a stylized, highly rhy
thmic type of music that usually (but n
ot always) includes portions of rhytmi
cally chanted words called “rap.” In r
apping, the artist speaks along with an
instrumental or synthesized beat.
 Hip hop arose inthe 1970s within the Afro-
American and Latino youth in the Bronxa
rea of New York City. But by the 1980s, it
had spread to manyother countries. It has
since evolved into a subculture thatencom
passes music (rapping, DJing, scratching,a
nd beatboxing); a nearly acrobatic style of
dancing,called break dancing; a distinct m

ALTERNATIVE MUSIC
 Alternative music was an underground independent form of
music that arose in the 1980’s.
 It became widely popular in the 1990’s as a way to defy “mai
nstream” rock music. Thus, it was known for its unconventio
nal practices such as distorted guitar sounds, oppressive lyric
s, and defiant attitudes. It was also characterized by high ene
rgy levels that bred new styles such as new wave, punk rock,
post-punk, indie rock, gothic rock, jangle pop, noise pop, C8
6, Madchester, Industrial Rock, and Shoegazing. Examples o
f alternative music are You Belong with Me, Shake It Off.
CLASSICAL MUSIC MADE POPULAR
 Meanwhile, clasical music continued to flourish al
ongside all these other musical style. The fame ma
sterpieces of Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, chopin, an
d Liszt continued to be propagated on the concert
stage and through recordings.
 For the part 20th century composers expanded th
e genres of clasical music with daring new styles s
uch as Minimalism, Chance Music and Avant-gar
de Music.
CROSSOVER PERFORMANCES: CLASICAL AND POP

In recent years, a number of
classical musicians have begun o
render “crossover” performances,
in which they combine classical
compositions with popular pieces
such as Jazz, Rock and Folk Music
in the same concert or recording.
