1. Joshua is 10 years old and his brother is 2 years old. In how
many years will Joshua be twice as old as his brother?
Now x years
Joshua’s age 10 x + 10
His Brother’s age 2 x+2

x + 10 = 2(x + 2)
2(x + 2) = x + 10
2x + 4 = x + 10
2x – x = 10 – 4
x=6

In 6 years, Joshua’s age will be twice of his brother’s age.

2. Jason is 4 times as old as his son.
In 3 years, Jason will be 3 times as
old as his son. How old is each of
them now?
2. Jason is 4 times as old as his son. In 3 years, Jason will be 3
times as old as his son. How old is each of them now?
In 3 years
Let x = son’s age now x+3
y = Jason’s age now y+3
Present age Age in 3 years
Son’s age x x+3
Jason’s age y y+3

y = 4x
y = 4x
y + 3 = 3(x + 3)
y = 4(6)
4x + 3 = 3x + 9
y = 24
4x – 3x = 9 – 3
x=6
3. How much 20% alcohol solution
and 50% alcohol solution must be
mixed together to get 12 gallons of
30% alcohol solution?
Let x = the no. of gallons of 20% alcohol sol.
y = the number of gallons of 50% alcohol sol.
Concentration Rate Gallons of sol. Amount
20% x 0.20x
50% y 0.50y
30% 12 0.30(12)
3. How much 20% alcohol solution and 50% alcohol solution
must be mixed together to get 12 gallons of 30% alcohol
solution?
Let x = the no. of gallons of 20% alcohol sol.
y = the number of gallons of 50% alcohol sol.

Concentration Rate Gallons of sol. Amount

20% x 0.20x
50% y 0.50y
30% 12 0.30(12)
x + y = 12 ------> x + y = 12
.02x + .05y = .30(12) ------> 2x + 5y = 36
– 2x – 2y = – 24 x + y = 12
2x + 5y = 36 x + 4 = 12
3y = 12 x=8
y=4

4. Two angles are complementary. The larger is 9 less than
twice the smaller angle. Find the two angles.
Let x = measure of the larger angle
y = measure of the smaller angle
The angles are complementary
x + y = 90
x = 2y – 9

x + y = 90 x = 2(33) – 9
x = 2y – 9 x = 66 – 9
2y – 9 + y = 90 x = 57
3y – 9 = 90
3y = 99 Hence, Larger angle = 57O
y = 33 Smaller angle = 33O

5. Kiko saved 20 coins from his baon consisting of 25 ₵ and
Php 1 coins. How many of each kind did he have if the coins
amounted to Php 10.25?
Let x = number of 25 ₵ coins
y = number of Php 1 coins
There are 20 coins in all
x + y = 20
The total value of the coins is Php 10.25
0.25x + y = 10.25

100(0.25) + 100y = 100(10.25) 25x + 100(– x + 20) = 1025

25x + 100y = 1025 25x – 100x + 2000 = 1025
–75x = –975
1st eq. x + y = 20 x = 13 y = –x + 20
2nd eq. y = – x + 20 y = –13 + 20
y=7
