BLOCKBOARDS
HANDLES
A handle is a part of, or attachment to, an object that can be moved or used
by hand. Handles for tools are an important part of their function, enabling
the user to exploit the tools to maximum effect.
TYPES OF HANDLES
Lever handles
Lever handles are a type of lever attached door latch.
They do not need firm grasping and twisting to open the door unlike doorknobs, so
they are more user friendly option compared to other types of door handles.
They offer a wide variety of options to use different types of lock cases and back
plates. You can use these handles on a variety of type of doors, using round roses to
long back plates.
Entrance, passage or closet, privacy, bedroom or bath, classroom, office—lever
handles can be used on any door.

As per I.S Code: 1659, the thickness of blockboards can be of 12mm, 16mm, 19mm,
25mm, 30mm, 35mm, 40mm, 45mm or 50 mm.
Blockboard price are always calculated per square foot. Their price range may vary
depending upon the type of inner core wood species used (softwood or hardwood), size
and thickness of the sheet.
The price approximately ranges for commercial blockboard from 90 to 150 Rs /Sq.ft.
and for water proof blockboard from 120 to 200 Rs /Sq.ft.
MANUFACTURING PROCESS
Blockboards are engineered wooden boards that are made using softwood blocks for
the core and hardwood veneer for the surfaces. The softwood blocks that form the
core are actually elongated rectangular strips or battens that are arranged alongside
each other across the entire length of the board.
PROPERTIES
• Good dimensional stability (even when exposed to humidity), and exhibit high
resistance to warping or twisting.
• Better ability to hold nails and screws, compared to other engineered boards such as
particle boards or MDF (medium density fibre boards).
• Light in weight, because the core blocks that form the bulk of the board are of softwood
that has much lesser density and weight compared to hardwood. Easier to transport as
its less denser.
• Can be finished using paints, varnishes or can be laminated. With proper finishing such
as by glueing laminates on its surfaces, blockboards can be made to appear exactly like
their costlier counterparts viz. plywood
• Another feature of blockboards is that they can are also easy to work with for carpenters
using their regular wood working tools. In contrast, carpenters find it very difficult to
work with other engineered boards such as MDF or Particle boards as these types do not
hold nails and only screws have to be used.
• Made in MR-Moisture resistant grade, as well as BWP-Boiling water proof grade, for
interior and exterior use respectively. The BWP variety uses superior glue (phenol
formaldehyde), and is stronger with better resistance to water or humidity.
CLASSIFICATION
Based on their quality and suitability of use, the two main types of
blockboards are:
• Softwood
• Hardwood
GRADES
There are two main grades of blockboard available
• MR Grade (Moisture Resistant)
• BWP or BWR Grade (Boiling Water Proof or Boiling Water Resistant)
MR Grade:
• They are also called interior grade blockboards.
• Flourish (MR) is a superior quality block board. It comes with tropical hardwood or
pinewood along with chemically treated selected core veneers, bonded with MUF resin.
Utmost care is given to the complete process ensuring the product is fully powder proof,
termite and moisture resistant and also quite economical.
• Moisture Resistance
• Static Bending Strength
• Good Insulation
• High Density
• Excellent Screw / Nail Holding Strength
APPLICATIONS:
APPLICATIONS:
Decorative Type:
• These blockboards have decorative face veneers on one or both sides and generally used
for high class furniture, interior decoration, panelling, partitions, etc. They are available
in BWP and MR grade both as per the application and its uses.
Commercial Type:
• These blockboards have veneers of commercial timber on both sides and generally used
for ordinary furniture, tabletops, panelling and partitions, flooring, seats of bus bodies,
railway carriages, etc.
Softwood:
At their core, blockboard sheets are made up of solid blocks of wood (also called
strips or battens). These solid wood blocks are placed adjacent to each other
lengthwise across the board and then the front and back surfaces of the board are
covered with hardwood veneers. (usually a single sheet of 4 mm ply on each side).
These core blocks are almost always made from softwood obtained from softwood
trees (e.g. Pine wood is very popular in India).
Hardwood:

them difficult to work for carpenters.

enough and resistant to both water and
humidity.
APPLICATIONS
Block boards are usually preferred over other options, when lengthy pieces
or wooden boards are required while making furniture. This is because
unlike plywood which has a tendency to sag in the middle, block board is
stiffer and is less prone to bending. Another advantage of block boards is
that they are also cheaper compared to good quality solid woods .
5 major applications of blockboards are:
• For making long book shelves
• For making tables and benches
• Blockboard Doors and Solid core flush doors
• Single and double beds, and Settees (Diwan) for
sitting.
• Lengthy wall panels.
