Echo and

Narcissus

Echo

 An attractive nymph who is a spirit of the land, Oread


 Born from the spirits of the mountains and woods
 The symbol of Echo is mountains
 At first Echo lived in the woods until she later moved on
into a cave
 Repeats the last words that other people say
Narcissus

 Narcissus is a hunter
 He is the son of Cephissus and
Leiriope
 His symbol is the daffodil
 Narcissus lived in the woods
 He became infatuated with
himself after he saw his reflection
in a pond
Background

 Zeus is a god who likes to have fun with


nymphs
 Hera doesn’t love anyone but her husband and
so she is always jealous whenever he hangs
with the nymphs
 On several occasions she tries to catch Zeus in
the act of hanging with other nymphs
 So, in this story she sets off to find him
Curse of Echo
 When she goes to find him, she stumbles upon Echo, a beautiful nymph who had
encountered Zeus previously
 Hera asks for the location of Zeus but Echo refuses to reveal his whereabouts
 Infuriated, Hera then curses Echo by making it so that she can only repeat the last words
that others have said

Echo encounters Narcissus
 Although Hera cursed Echo it really hadn’t affected her life a lot
 However, when she is roaming through the woods, and she finds Narcissus things change
 At first sight she falls in love with his face because it is a gorgeous one
 She starts to embrace him, but he doesn’t like that and runs away
 Echo is depressed and goes to lives in a cave from now on
The pond

 After Narcissus ran away from Echo, he then


stumbles upon a pond which is not accessible to
all creatures
 He is in desperate need of a drink and goes up to
the pond
 He then sees a figure which is his own reflection
in the pond and becomes infatuated with it
 He cries begging to be able to touch his
reflection until he has no more tears
 He stays by the reflection so long he dies and
turns into a flower, the daffodil
Moral

 There is danger in loving


oneself, because if you
love yourself too much you
can lose sight of people
who care about you and the
people you care about
