PROJECT BRIEF: COMMERCIAL ZONE

DEVELOPMENT (36 ACRES) in


Thirumazhisai Satellite Town Project (127

LOCATION:
• So, for a big metropolitan city Chennai, the ideal ST
option became Thirumazhisai which is located near
Poonamalle Town about 30kms from Chennai. It falls
under the Tiruvallur District.
• The area has fast grown into a leading commercial
hub far west of Chennai, adjacent to Chennai
Bangalore Highway, the busiest highway catering to
business and leisure travel between two of the top IT
hubs of India.
• Satellite Townships (ST) are smaller metropolitan
areas created near to larger metropolitan cities
essentially to accommodate the growing
population and infrastructure needs of people
migrating from small towns to big cities.
• With the sudden exponential growth of Chennai
in the last two decades, satellite townships are
the only way ahead to meet the demands of a
burgeoning city.

FOCUS OF THE STUDIO-

• This studio will focus on the role of emerging tools and


processes for understanding of complex and macro forces in
the realm of the built environment as well as designing
within this context.

• It would explore relationships between user groups,


activities, movements, landforms and urban typologies using
diagramming and mapping tools to come up with creative
prescriptions.
• Towards this end, the project this studio will focus on
is of a macro scale involving master planning of site,
oriented towards architectural design situated in its
rightful context.

• Understanding ecological and sociological factors at


play will feed into creating a campus that not only is
seamless and blends into the developing urban fabric
but also act as a catalyst for responsible growth.
• SITE DETAILS: 

• TNHB has acquired about 120 acres at Thirumazhisai


to build the township. The land comes under the
purview of CMDA. Now with the revised FSI
approved by CMDA, there is a huge potential to
increase the no of floors per unit. About one third of
the area is earmarked for infrastructure facilities for
the businesses and residents of the township.
