Accepted terminology for common types
of AUB
• HMB is the blood loss of >80ml/ period
• IMB is the bleeding between periods, often seen with
endometrial and cervical polyps
• PCB is bleeding after sex, often associated with cervical
abnormalities
• PMB is bleeding > 1 yr after cessation of periods, exclude
endometrial pathology or vaginal atrophy
• BEO is the bleeding of endometrial origin, diagnosis of
exclusion, has replaced the term Dysfunctional uterine
bleeding
Symptoms that may be associated with HMB
and related pathologies
Investigations
The NICE guidelines for HMB indicate the following
investigation
• FBC
• Coagulation screen – menarche or family history of
coagulation defect
• Pelvic Ultrasound Scan – structural or histological
abnormalities
• High vaginal and Endocervical Swap
• EB should be considered
• Thyroid function test – suggestive of thyroid disorder
