Electricity & Water analogy

Electric current is a directed flow of electrons

Electric current
Electric current shows the amount of charge passing in a unit of time

q: charge flowing through cross sectional area in [C]

t: time needed for q charge to flow in [s]
I: electric current in [A]
The unit of electric current is A (ampere)
Example
What charge pass through 0.5 Ampere lamp in 200 seconds?

What is the current if it takes 10 seconds for 5 C to pass?

Electricity & Water analogy

Review
1 kA = 1000 A
1 mA = 0.001 A
The source of electric current

To produce a steady current flowing around a circuit, there must be a device which
acts to force the electrons around the circuit. Such a device is called a battery (cell).
Historical mistake

Review
Metals are conductors
Plastic are insulators
Conventional current is in opposite direction to the electron flow!!!
Activity

Let’s check whether different objects like nail, pencil, match, paper,
are conductors or not. (graphite on the paper)
