Strategic Partnership Development: A Process
 The partnership is a term that evokes much sensitivity with its implicit connotations
of sharing and trust. While aid and charity may refer to a more unequal aid
relationship, the term ‘partnership’ suggests equality, respect, reciprocity and
ownership (Gutierrez, 2008). Although, partnerships may also be what seems to be
the opposite. Therefore, strategic partnership development for a sustainable
relationship between organizations is of paramount importance, given that it also
affects long-term growth and expansion.
 The Nuffield Institute for Health partnership principles briefs the key stages or
principles of partnership as
 Principle one – Recognition and acceptance of the need for partnership.
 Principle two – Development of Clarity and Realism of Purpose
 Principle three – Ensuring Commitment and ownership
 Principle four – Creation of robust and clear partnership arrangements
 Principle five – Monitor, Measure & Learn
 Similarly, some other literature also describe a similar flow in Strategic
collaborative development.
 As described by Child & Faulkner (1998), Gray (1989) and Joseph Rowntree
Foundation (1997) .
 All these proposed stages, principles and models of collaborative development have
a similar structure that indicates, first, identification of the need for partnership.
Second, the transition or management of partnership (trust-building and
information sharing) and third, the exit (or, the outcome of the partnership).
