The numbers 4, 6, 7, 10 and
12 are Cardinal numbers.
These are numbers used
for counting.
They also tell how many
things a collection has. We
cannot see numbers. We
can only see and write
numerals.
But.. Do you know the
difference between
number and numeral?
Let’s find
out!
Number
• A number is a count or
measurement that is really
an idea in our minds.
• We write or talk about numbers
using numerals such as "4" or
"four".
Numeral
• A numeral is a symbol or
name that stands for a number.

Examples: 3, 49 and twelve are
all numerals
.
So the number is
an idea,
the numeral is
how we write it.
Cardinal number
Cardinal numbers

• It say how many of
something there are
such as one, two,
three, four, five.
Cardinal numbers
• Cardinal numbers are
counting numbers and an
idea of “How Many”

• The symbol for a cardinal

number is called numeral.
Example:

there are 6
ballons in
this picture.
For example:
How many dogs are there in all?
To know the total number of dogs, we need to
count the dogs given in the image.
Therefore, there
are 8 dogs in all.
Example: How many kites are there in all?
Count the kites to know the total number of kites .
On counting we get:

Thus, from the above examples, we see that

to know “how many?” of something is there,
we need to use cardinal numbers.
Try it!
• Open your math
book on page 2-3.
Can you give the number of each set?

1.
2.
3.
Go to page 3 and
answer “Let’s Try”
give the cardinal
number of each
set.
