Lesson 7
Subtraction of Whole
Numbers without
Regrouping
Think Big
According to the Ocean Park incharge,
7,584 students from public and private
schools have come to the place for the
month of August.
Think Big
If 2,312 are from the public
schools, how many private school
students have visited the Ocean
Park?
Learn It

To find the answer, we

subtract 2,312 from 7,584.
a. The long method can be used.
7,584 (minuend) = 7,000+500+80+4
-2,312 (subtrahend) = 2,000+300+10+2
5,272 5,000+200+70+2
=5,272
Therefore, 5,272 private school students have
visited the Ocean Park.
b. The shortcut method can also be used.
7,584
-2,312
5,272 Subtract the ones. 4-2 =2
Subtract the tens. 8-1 =7
Subtract the hundreds. 5-3 =2
Subtract the thousands. 7-2 =5
Subtract 2,345 from 14,956
Let’s Try
1. What is the difference of
8,761 and 5,210?
Answer: 3,551
2. What is the difference of
67,248 and 33,126?
Answer: 34,122
Remember!
Remember
To subtract whole numbers
without regrouping:
Remember
• Arrange the numbers in column.
• Subtract from right to left, starting
with the ones.
• Continue subtracting with the tens,
hundreds, and so on.
Remember
The bigger number in
subtraction is the minuend.
Remember
 The smaller number in
subtraction is the
subtrahend.
Remember
 The answer in subtraction is
