 It was Africa where Gandhi first


got recognition.
 Gandhi faced racial
discrimination in Africa.
 He was thrown out of the train
after he refused to leave first
class. z
 Then he decided to protest which
later emerged  as a
big Civil Rights Movement.
 Gandhi's ideas, persuation skills,
    And public relations emerged       
    from here.

Gandhi ji and his
Early Life           
• Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi
also known as Mahatma Gandhi
was an Indian Lawyer, Anti Colonial
Nationalist and Political Ethicist.

• He was born and raised in Gujrat.

• He trained law in london and


further been to South Africa to
represent Indian merchant in
a lawsuit.

Gandhi's return to India            

• Gandhi returned to India in 1915 at the request of Gopal Krisha Gokhale.

• He was introduced to indian issues, politics, Indian people primarily


by Gokhale.

• He joined Indian National Congress as Gokhale was the key


leader of the congress party known for his resistance and moderation.

• Gandhi took leadership of congress in 1920 and began escalating his


demands.

• Congress declared India's independence on 26 Jan. 1930.

• British did not recognise the declaration but negotiation


ensued, with the Congress taking a role in a provincial govt.

India's struggle for Independence 
Various important movements led by Gandhi:-

Champaran Satyagraha(1917)
• This was Gandhi's first major achievement.

• Champaran agitation pitted the local peasantary against their landlords.


• The peasantry was forced to grow
z Indigo by there ladlords.

• Peasants were reluctant to it as the


demand for Indigo was declining for over
two decades.

• They were also forced to sell there crops


to the planters at a fixed price.

• They appealed to Gandhi in his


Ashram in Ahemdabad.

• Gandhi took the stratergy of


non-violent protest (satyagraha).

• His stratergy took the


administration by surprise and
won concessions from the
authorities.
Kheda Satyagraha (1918)
z                             
 Kheda was hit by floods and and famines and the peasantry was demanding relief from
taxes.

 Gandhi initiated a signature campaign using Non-Cooperation as a technique.

 Peasants pledged non-payment of revenue even under the threat of confiscation of land.

 The social boycott of revenue officials accompanied the agitation.


z worked hard to win public support across the country.
 Gandhi

 After few months the Govt. gave way on important provisions and relaxed the conditions of
payment of revenue taxes until the famine ended.
