Chapter 2:

Estimating Sums of
Whole Numbers
2.1 ADDITION OF 3-4 DIGIT NUMBERS WITH
AND WITHOUT REGROUPING
One day in Canada, a
train carried 2 567
passengers during the first
trip. 2 675 passengers on
the second trip and 3 856
passengers on the third
trip. How many
passengers did the train
carry for the three trips?
Let us the find sum by following the rules in adding 3-digit numbers.

1 1. Add the ones:

2 567 7+5+6=18
+ 2 675 Write in the ones
3 856 place and carry 1 to
the tens place.
8
11 2. Add the tens:
2 567 1 + 6 + 7+ 5=19
+ 2 675 Write 9 in the tens
3 856 place and carry 1 to
the hundreds place.
98
2 11 3. Add the tens:
2 567 1 + 5+ 6+ 8=20
+ 2 675 Write 0 in the
3 856 hundreds place and
carry 2 to the
098 hundreds place.
11 4. Add the thousands:
2 567 2 + 2+ 2+ 3=9
+ 2 675 Write 9 in the
3 856 thousands place.
9 098
The train carried 9 098
on the three trips.
Remember
When we add larger numbers with regrouping, write
the addends in vertical form and align the digits in
such a way that the ones, tens, hundreds, thousands,
and ten thousands are in their proper places. Add
numbers from right to left and regroup when it is
necessary.
