Types of Writing
Generally, there are three types of writings according to purpose_
Informative, journalistic, and literary.
 Informative Writing aims to inform, to raise awareness, about topics of general
interest and concern. “How to do” or “Do-It- Yourself” manuals, cookbook,
travelogue, and articles in science, environment and technology are some examples of
informative writing.
 Journalistic Writing broadly refers to those published in newspapers, magazines,
namely news stories, investigative reports, feature articles, columns, editorials, latest
fashion, invention, discoveries, etc. This type of writing seeks to report quickly on
events or happenings, controversies, development on issues, opinion and trends.
Timeliness, or accuracy of facts, fairness, balance, and objectivity marks the news stories.
The columns, editorials, express opinions to influence, persuade, or convince the reader,
while feature article entertain the reader.
 Literary Texts aim to capture the readers’ imagination and create emotional appeal
through shared significant human experience (SHE) which have permanent value and are
expressed in excellent form and style. Literary writings takes many forms__ poetry,
prose(short stories, essays, letters, diaries, journals, novel, novelettes, biographies,
autobiographies) The formal and informal essays you have studied are examples of literary
writings.

Do you know that cooking is an art? Yes, it is. In fact, culinary arts is a course
offered in some prestigious schools here and abroad.
Excellent chefs or cooks are sensitive about their work as fine artists. At
parties, food usually takes center stage; hence, the artists cook takes great
pains to present a delicious-tasting, delicious-looking and appetizing fare
for the guests.
 Listening Comprehension
Listen to and watch your teacher or a classmate simulate the following
cooking demonstration conducted on tv for a brand of crackers.

 Writing Composition
Write an expository essay telling the reader how to do something.
