INTRODUCTION OF FORMWORK

 Formwork has been used in construction for hundreds and

thousands of years. With the help of formwork,
structures of all sizes and shapes can be created.
 Formwork is used as a temporary construction. It is used
to give the concrete the right shape at the prescribed
height. Formwork is erected on a temporary basis to
support the concrete until it reaches full strength.
 Formwork is removed when the concrete has reached its
required strength. The shape of the interior face can be
obtained according to the concrete proper design using
formwork.
WHAT IS FORMWORK ?

Formwork (shuttering) is a temporary construction

designed to provide temporary support as a mold of
fresh concrete. It is capable of pouring concrete into
this temporary structure corresponding to the
building, compacting it, and casting it to the desired
shape. Formwork is removed when concrete has
gained its proper strength.
TYPES OF FORMWORK

 Steel formwork
 Mivan/aluminium formwork
 Timber formwork
 Plywood formwork
 Fabric formwork
 Plastic formwork
INTRODUCTION TO MIVAN

The increase in urban population is a challenging

thing for civil engineers in the housing sector. With
the help of old conventional methods, it is not
possible to meet the various demands of inhabitants.
New construction technologies need in the housing
sector, to meet these demands at a faster pace.
Mivan formwork is one of the modern technologies
that comes under advanced technologies list.
MIVAN Formwork

 Mivan is basically an aluminium formwork system

developed by one of the construction company from
Europe in 1990. i.e. MIVAN Company Ptv. Ltd.
 Now a days more than 30,000sq.m. of formwork
used in world are under their operation.
 It is fast, Simple and Cost effective . It is used
where Durability is the prime Consideration.
AIM AND OBJECTIVE

 AIM: To provide budget housing for increasing

population, while considering environment.
 OBJECTIVE: The huge amount of tropical wood being
consumed each year for formwork has resulted in
criticism from environmentalists, as well as the
continual escalation of timber prices. As a result,
there has been a strong tendency to use other
formwork(MIVAN)materials or systems to replace
timber.
COMPONENTS

 The basic element of the formwork is the panel, which is an

extruded aluminium rail section, welded to an aluminium
sheet. This produces a lightweight panel
 The panels are made from high strength aluminium alloy
with a 4 mm thick skin plate and 6mm thick ribbing behind
to stiffen the panels. The panels are manufactured in
MIVAN’S dedicated factories in Europe and South East Asia.
Once they are assembled they are subjected to a trial
erection in order to eliminate any dimensional or on site
problems.
WALL COMPONENTS
1)Wall panel :-
2) Rocker :-
3)Kicker :-
4) Stub pin:-

Stud pin
BEAM COMPONENTS
1) Beam Side Panel :-
2) Prop Head :-
3) Panel for soffit beam :-
DECK COMPONENTS
1) Deck Panels :-
2) Deck Prop and Prop Length :-
3) Soffit Length:-
OTHER COMPONENTS
The other components used excluding wall, beam and deck
components are internal and external soffit corners, exterior and
interior corners for wall panels.
PROCEDURE OF MIVAN FORMWORK
CONSTRUCTION
 The construction procedure in the case of MIVAN
formwork is quite similar to the traditional type of
formwork. The steps involved in the MIVAN
Formwork Construction are as follows :
1) Setting up the Wall reinforcing steel
2) Placing formwork
3) Pouring concrete
WORK CYCLE
The system usually follows a four day cycle : -
Day 1 : -
The first activity consists of erection of vertical reinforcement bars and
one side of the vertical formwork for the entire floor or a part of one floor.
Day 2 :-
The second activity involves erection of the second side of the vertical
formwork and formwork for the floor .
Day 3 :-
Fixing reinforcement bars for floor slabs and casting of walls and slabs.
Day 4 :-
Removal of vertical form work panels after 24hours, leaving the props in
place for 7 days and floor slab formwork in place for 2.5 days.
ADVANTAGES OF MIVAN

 Mivan Formwork requires relatively less labour.

 Faster completion of floors.
 Lesser number of joints and reduced leakages.
 Smooth finishing of wall and slab.
 Low maintenance.
 More number of repetations (250+).
DISADVANTAGES OF MIVAN

 Initial setup takes time

 It is expensive and used for typical floors only
 It needs skilled labours for alignment maintenance
 Construction joints should be set properly
ECONOMICS

 The aluminium formwork provides an integrated

scaffolding system which reduces the cost of scaffolding
requirements. The mechanical and electrical installation
is simplified as conduits are embedded in the structure
by precise engineering of outlets and service ducts.
 Thus, we can conclude that the overall cost of the
project is lesser when compared to project using
traditional methods of formwork.
CONCLUSION
 Civil engineers not only build but also enhance the
quality of life. Their creativity and technical skill
help to plan, design, construct and operate the
facilities essential to life. It is important for civil
engineers to gain and harness the potent and
versatile construction tools.
 This technology has great potential for application
in India to provide affordable housing to its rising
population.

DISCUSSION
The building in plan made an angle of
172
0
, 168º and 1610with each other. The
quality of construction is maintained at the site with the use of RMC. The RMC plant has
a capacity of producing 90 cubic meter of concre
te of concrete per hour. The concrete
used was of 25 grades. The construction from foundation up to stilt is done with
conventional practice while the upper floors are constructed using ‘MIVAN’ technology.
The construction company has imported three sets of aluminium forms. The cost is about
Rs.500/-sq.ft as against Rs.650/-sq.ft using conventional methods. Thus it can be said
that even though the cost of construction is little bit high it has an unmatched quality
compared to the conventional method.
MIVAN formwork played a vital role in the construction of the project. The
project was completed not only on stipulated period of time but also paid off with its
attributes. Speedy & quality dwelling units were provided to the people of low income
groups at very reasonable costs. MIVAN is a definitely future of this ever growing
construction industry with lots of project still awaiting its touch of excellence.
