Combustion of Reactive Mixtures

 Introduction:

 A chemical fuel is a substance which release heat energy combustion process

 The principal elements of each fuel are carbon and hydrogen
 Reactant air initial constitutes start the reactions
 Products are final constitutes
 Solid, liquid & gases

 Mixtures
 Combustion eqn.

 In a combustion chamber mass of air and fuel enter – chemical reaction

 Combustion products pass to exhaust

 Total mass of reactants = Total mass of products

 But chemically reactant are different from products

 Products leave at higher temperature

 Enthalpy of formation:
 Heat of Combustion:
 The heat of combustion (ΔHc0) is the energy released as heat when a compound undergoes complete
combustion with oxygen under standard conditions.
 The chemical reaction is typically a hydrocarbon reacting with oxygen to form carbon dioxide, water
and heat.
 It may be expressed with the quantities:
 energy/mole of fuel (J/mol)
 energy/mass of fuel
 energy/volume of fuel

 The heat of combustion is traditionally measured with a bomb calorimeter.

 It may also be calculated as the difference between the heat of formation (ΔfH0) of the products and
reactants.
 Enthalpy of combustion:

 Determine the enthalpy of combustion of liquid octane C8H18 at 25 deg cel and 1 atm, using enthalpy of
formation data. Assume the water in the products is in liquid form.

 Soln.
