Hand Tools
COMMON ELECTRICAL
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT
ELECTRICIANS
• are responsible in installing and maintaining electrical
systems to various locations such as Residential building,
Commercial building, and Industrial Company. This
requires tools and equipment that will help them to
efficiently install electrical wiring system, maintain good
circuitry, and provide adequate supply of electricity to
the consumers.
TOOLS
• are generally defined as devices that aid in
accomplishing tasks or instruments that can be used in
performing an operation or necessary in the practice of a
vocation or profession. It can be considered as extension
of the human hand in increasing the work speed, power
and accuracy, and systematically accomplish the tasks.
CLASSIFICATION OF ELECTRICAL TOOLS AND
EQUIPMENT
• It has a negative or
flat shaped tip used to
drive screws with
negative-slot screw
head.
PHILLIPS SCREWDRIVER
• This is a counter part of
Standard screwdriver. The
tip is cross or positive
shaped used to drive screws
with cross or positive slot-
screw head.
STUBBY SCREWDRIVER
• This type of screwdriver is
similar to standard
screwdriver and Philips
screwdriver, but shorter in
length. This is usually used to
turn screws in tight spaces.
WIRE STRIPPER
• A wire stripper is a portable handheld tool
used by electricians in removing or stripping
the wire insulation. This comes into two (2)
types: manual wire stripper and automatic
wire stripper.
WIRE STRIPPER
• In using manual wire stripper, you need
to manually rotate it while applying
pressure around the insulation to cut
and adjust the wire or pull it to separate
or remove it from its wire. However, in
using automatic wire stripper, you just
need to apply pressure or grip the
handle, then it will automatically
separate and remove the insulation. It
strips the wires quickly compared to
manual wire stripper.
ELECTRICIAN’S KNIFE
• Same purpose as the
wire stripper, but this
Electrician’s knife is
designed to skin cables
(large sizes of wires).
CRIMPER
• This is used to crimp the
terminals into the edge of
the conductor for easy
attachment of the conductor
to the terminal logs.
CONDUIT BENDER
• For installation of conduit or electrical tubing with some
bends to be applied, conduit bender is used to make
bends to prevent deformities in conduit. There are two
types of hand operated benders: (1) hickey and (2) hand
benders or one-shot benders. These two (2) types of
bender are usually made in iron and some of handheld
benders are offered in aluminum.
CONDUIT BENDER
• The difference between these two is the size of the head.
Hickey is 60% smaller than hand bender which is
commonly used to make very tight bends. On the other
hand, hand bender is more preferred to use since it has
bending indicators etched on the side to aid in the
bending process. And if the hand bender is used to its
appropriate size of conduit to be bent (e.g. ½ size of
hand bender for ½ diameter of rigid conduit) you can
create a 90 degree bend in one-shot that is why
sometimes it is called “One-Shot bender”.
PVC CUTTER
• This tool is used for
cutting PVC pipes. It is
operated simply like using
a pair of scissors, by
ratcheting its handle to
force the blade to cut the
pipe.
PIPE CUTTER
• This is another tool used for cutting
metal conduits which is more
convenient and prevents inclined
cutting.
• It comprises a grasping device and
three sharp-edged wheels forced
inward by screw pressure that cuts
into the pipe when the tool is rotated.
HACKSAW
• Used for cutting
conduits
PIPE VISE
• This tool is used for
holding conduits while
cutting, threading, or
reaming.
PIPE THREADER OR PIPE STOCK AND DIE
•This is used to
grip or hold
pipes.
HAMMER
• Hammers are designed to drive, pull, and fit nails.
There are various types of hammers but the two
hammers below are the most commonly used in
electrical works.
RUBBER MALLET
• Used for rewinding
jobs like forming coils,
assembly and
disassembly of motors
CLAW HAMMER
• Used to strike nail
by hitting the head
and the claw to pull
out the nails
