ALTERNATIVE TOURISM
◦ Alternative Tourism involves travel that is personal and authentic and encourages
interaction with the local environment, people and communities without causing any harm
to it.
◦ It involves traveling to relatively remote, undisturbed natural areas with the objective of
admiring, studying and enjoying the scenery of its wild plants and animals and cultural
attributes.
◦ Alternative forms of tourism directly support the local population and the economic diversity.
Alternative tourism includes cultural, educational, scientific, adventure, business, rural,
extreme, agricultural (farm), hunting, wine, eco, religious, spa, health & sex tourism.
Features of Alternative Tourism
◦  It is characterized by individual activities and tourists desire to experience local culture
and environment.
◦  it involves uncrowded locations and non-peak holiday seasons.
◦  Tourists of alternative tourism normally avoid the services that are used by tourists such as
accommodation, transport, and other services
◦ Tourists of alternative tourism prefer to use or share the services of the local people & their
main motive is to experience and get an insight into their way of living.
RESPONSIBLE TOURISM
◦ Responsible tourism is a form of sustainable tourism that the tourism practices are
consumed/conducted in a more responsible way.
◦ Responsible tourism focuses on the natural, socio- cultural, economic and political contexts
of a dest, which increases the benefits and minimize negative impacts.
Features of Responsible tourism
◦ It minimizes negative social, economic and environmental impacts
◦ It generates greater economic benefits for local people and enhances the well-being of host
communities
◦ It improves working conditions and access to the industry
◦ It also involves local people in decisions that affect their lives and life chances
◦ It makes positive contributions to the conservation of natural and cultural heritage embracing
diversity
◦ It provides more enjoyable experiences for tourists through more meaningful connections with
local people, and a greater understanding of local cultural, social and environmental issues
◦ It provides access for physically challenged people
◦ It is culturally sensitive, encourages respect between tourists and hosts, and builds local pride
and confidence
