EDUCATIONAL
SYSTEM
(ANCIENT TIMES)
From an early age, the children would be
going out to the fields, boys and girls alike,
to lend a hand in simple tasks like gathering
and winnowing the corn, tending poultry
and cattle.
Overview of the Ancient Education:

•The method of learning was memorization, and

the motivation was the fear of harsh physical
discipline.
•Starting in about 3500 BC, various writing
systems developed in ancient civilizations
around the world.
Ancient Egyptian Education
*Common subjects included in ancient
Egyptian education were reading, writing,
mathematics, as well as religious instruction
and morals.
*Girls were not sent to school and instead
their education was conducted at home.
-sewing, cooking, and reading
What were Ancient Egyptian Schools Like

*Schools that taught ancient Egyptian education were

generally attached to religious temples or government
buildings.
*People who acted as teachers were generally priests of
the temples or government officials acting as scribes.
*Younger students- wooden tablets
*older students-papyrus
*General Village School-Preliminary education

*Prince’s School-attended by the sons of the Pharaoh

How did the Ancient Egyptian Education System
Work
*The most important subjects taught at schools were
mathematics, reading, writing, arithmetic, geometry,
geography, astronomy, medicine, and moral instruction,
all subjects which can be seen as important topics in the
Egyptian society of the time.
*School started in the morning and a break was given at
midday with the rest of classes then commencing later in
the afternoon.
Ancient Egyptian Teachers

*Priests- moral and religious education for the children.

*Scribes- read and write and then go on to teach them

other subjects like mathematics and medicine.
ANCIENT EGYPTIAN SCRIPTS:

1.HIEROGLYPS SCRIPTS
-was invented by the god Thoth
and called their hieroglyphic
script "mdwt ntr" (god's words).
The word hieroglyph comes from
the Greek
*hieros (sacred)
*glypho (inscriptions)
2. HIERATIC SCRIPT
- invented and developed more or less at
the same time as the hieroglyphic script
and was
used in parallel with it for everyday
purposes
such as keeping records and accounts
and writing letters. It was used until the
26th Dynasty.
3. DEMOTIC SCRIPT
•The Demotic or popular script, a name
given to it by Herodotus, developed from a
northern variant of the Hieratic script in
around 660 BC.
•During the 26th Dynasty it became the
preferred script at court, however during the
4th century it was gradually replaced by the
Greek-derived Coptic alphabet.
4. COPTIC SCRIPT
-The name 'Coptic' derives from the Greek word for Egyptian:
Aigyptioi which became Qibt in Arabic and then was
Latinized to become Copt.
FORMS
OF
WRITING
Cuneiform
•was a three-dimensional writing system.
•named after the Latin word cuneus, which
means "wedge".
•It was written by using a special bone, wood,
or metal instrument called a "calamus" to dig
wedges and linear scrapes out of the surface
that was being written on.
Papyrus -is a thin paper-like material made from the
pith of the papyrus plant

Cyperus papyrus
The Egyptians had a decimal system
using seven different symbols:
•1 is shown by a single stroke.
•10 is shown by a drawing of a hobble for cattle.
•100 is represented by a coil of rope.
•1,000 a drawing of a lotus plant.
•10,000 is represented by a finger.
•100,000 a tadpole or frog
