What causes weight to increase, decrease or
remain constant
1) Diet- it is very important to maintain a balance diet and eat food from all the food groups in
the correct proportions because this can lead to an individual becoming over weight or
underweight. For example if an individual eats to much carbs then the excess will be stored
as fat
2) Physical activity- being active will allow individuals to burn off excess fat from their body and
maintain a constant body weight or lose weight if needed.
3) Lifestyle- a persons daily routine has a direct impact on their weight, a person who sits all
day typing will more likely gain weight as compared to an individual who is constantly on the
move
4) Genetics – weight gain or loss can be due to a gene inherited from a family member

Diet and exercise
Diet and exercise compliment each other. Once a person maintains a balanced diet and exercises
regularly (at least 1 hour a day) this will allow them to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a person’s mass in kilograms divided by the square of height in
meters. A high BMI will indicate that a person is over weight and a low BMI will indicate that a
person is underweight.
