Introduction of RMG
The Ready –Made Garments (RMG) sector of Bangladesh
has emerged as the biggest earner of foreign currency.
The RMG sector has experienced an exponential growth
since the 1980s. The sector contributes significantly to
the GDP. It also provides employment to around 4.2
million Bangladeshis. 85 percent of Bangladeshi production
was sold to North Americ. RMG roughly covers 76 per cent
of the total export of the country and is the highest
earning industry in the economy. Study shows that
the RMG sector and related upstream and downstream
activities are estimated to contribute an income of about
$ 5.0 billion which is equivalent to about 9.0 per cent of
Bangladesh's current GDP.
History of RMG sector in Bangladesh
Reaz Garments was established in 1960 as a small tailoring
outfit, named Reaz Store in Dhaka. It served only domestic
markets for about 15 years. In 1973 it changed its name to
M/s Reaz Garments Ltd. and expanded its operations into
export market by selling 10,000 pieces of men's shirts
worth French Franc 13 million to a Paris-based firm in 1978
In 1978 Nurool Quader Khan sent 130 trainees to South
Korea where they learned how to produce readymade
garments. With those trainees, he set up the factory "Desh
Garments"  to produce garments for export.
Others garments at that time are Bond Garments, Paris
Garments, Azim Group, Sunman Group etc.
Materials for RMG
Sewing Materials: Fabric, sewing threads, Niddle,
Zipper, buttons, trims, etc.
Packing Materials: Hand Tag, Poly Bag, Tissue Paper,
Price Tag, Hanger etc.
Present Condition of RMG
In 2019, there were about 4.62 Factories 462000
thousand garment factories Workers 4.22M
in Bangladesh. Male 41%
The estimated size of workers Female 59%
in RMG sector is 4.22 million. Earning $27.9bn
Currently, the male to female
Target earning
ratio of workers is 41:59.
Earning in 2019-20 financial $50bn
