Lesson 1

Concept of Functions
Objectives
1. Define Function and Relation.
2. Find the domain and range of the
function.
3. Evaluate Function.
4. Perform operations on function.
Key Words
1. Set
- A well-defined collection of objects, called
the elements or members of the sets.
2. Ordered pairs
- A composition of the x-coordinate (abscissa)
and y-coordinate (ordinate) having two values
written in a fixed order within parenthesis.
Key Words
3. A "relation" is just a relationship between sets of information usually presented by
ordered pairs.
4. The domain of a function is the set X. That is a collection of all possible x-values.
5. The range of a function is the set of all images as x varies throughout the domain. A
collection of all possible y-values.
Domain and Range
Types of Relation
Conclusion

•Not every relation is a function.

•Every function is a relation.
Function

A “function” is a well-defined relation

wherein each member of the first set or
domain, corresponds to exactly one
element of the second set or the range.

Function can be presented through

ordered pairs, equations, tables and
graphical form.

Functions as a graph
Vertical-Line Test
A set of points in the xy-plane is the
graph of a function if and only if every
vertical line intersects the graph in at
most one point.
Functions as a graph
Evaluating Function
Function notation f(x) read as “f
of x”

Example
1. f ( x )  2 x  3
findf ( 1, 0,1, 2)
Operations on Functions

Given;
f ( x)  2 x  6
g ( x)  x  3
