WHAT IS PERIODONTAL
DISEASE ???
Periodontal or Gum disease is a
pathological inflammatory
condition of the gum and bone
support ( periodontal tissue )
surrounding the teeth.
WHAT ARE HEALTHY GUM ?
• A healthy mouthis not just about having white teeth but also
healthy gum.
• The gum feels a little springly when held .
• Smooth gum surface texture .
• Gums don’t bleed easily when touched or pressed .
• Healthy gums should look pink and firm , not red and swollen.
• Healthy gums will form a good seal at the gum margin so no
bacteria are able to penetrate this area.
• Healthy gums act as a barrier between bacteria in your mouth
and prevent these harmfull bacteria from entering your body.
WHAT ARE SIGN UNHEALTHY GUMS ?
• Gum that are red , puffy or swollen , or tender .
• Gums that bleed during or flossing .
• Teeth that look longer because your gums have receded
• Gums that have separated , or pulled away , from your
teeth , creating pocket
• Changes in the way your teeth fit together when you bite
• Pus coming from between your teeth and gums constant bad
breath or a bad taste in your mouth
TYPES OF PERIODONTAL DISEASE
GINGGIVITIS
1.Early stage of disease.
2.Red swollen, and bleeding gums.
3.Usually reversible through good oral hygiene and
preventive car.
4.Not uncommon in young adults and even youth .

PERIODONTITIS
1.Advanced stage of disease.
2.Chronic inflammatory response leading to
irreversible destruction of tissues and bone that
support the teeth.
3.Treatment requires more aggressive surgical care.
WHAT CAUSES PERIODONTAL
DISEASE ?
1.Our mouth are full bacteria , that’s why we should keep
clean our oral hygienist, bacteria a long with mucus
and other particles , it can be plaque
2.Brushing and flossing that can help get it rid of plaque
3. Plaque that is not removed can be harden and from
“tartar” that brushing doesn’t clean
4.Just a professional cleaning by dentist or dental
hygienist can remove tartar and plaque
STAGE OF PERIODONTAL DISEASE
There are there stages of gum disease or periodontal disease :
1.GINGGIVITIS
This is the earliest stage of periodontal disease , an inflammation of the gum
caused by plaque buildup at the gum line. If daily brushing and flossing don’t remove
the plaque , its produces toxin that can irritate the gum tissue, causing gingivitis.
2. PERODONITIS
At this stage , the supporting bone and fibers that hold your teeth in place are
irreversible damaged . Your gums may begin to form a pocket below the gumline ,
which traps food and plaque
3. ADVANCED PERIODONTITIS
In this final stage of gum disease, the fibers and bone supporting your teeth are
destroyed , which can cause your teeth to shift or loosen.
HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE PERIODONTAL
DISEASE?
• Gums that are red , puffy or swollen , or tender
• Gums that bleeding during brushing or flossing
• Teeth that look longer because your gums have receded
• Gums that have separated , or pulled away , from your teeth ,
creating a pocket
• Changes in the way your teeth fit together when you bite
• Pus coming from between your teeth and gums
• Constant bad breath or bad taste in your mouth
HOW CAN I PREVENT PERIODONTAL
DISEASE ?
• Brush for two to three minutes , at least twice a day with fluoridated
toothpaste.
• Floss daily to remove plaque from places your toothbrush can’t reach.
• Altough not a substitute for brushing and flossing , a mouth rinse can
reduce plaque up to 20%.
• Eat a healthy diet.
• Know your risk . Age, smoking , diet and genestics can all increase your
risk for periodontal disease.
• See a periodontist. Get an annual comprehensive periodontal evaluation
( CPE ) from a dental professional.
TREATMENT OF PERIODONTAL
DISEASE
• Deep cleaning ( scalling and root planning )

• Medications

• Surgical Treatment
