What is Ethnography?

▪ Ethnography is a qualitative research design that studies a distinct

culture (values, beliefs, behaviors, language)of a distinct group within
society.
▪ The distinct group of people have usually been together over an
extended period of time, having similar beliefs, attitudes, behavior,
language.
▪ Ethnography research originates from the academic disciplines of
anthropology and sociology
Data collection

1. Will ethnography answer your research question?

2. Find the distinct cultural group within society.
3. Gain entry to group through a gatekeeper
4. Become immersed in the everyday lives of the group (in the field) for
extended periods of time
5. Data primarily as observations and interviews… (Studied on 20 or more
people of the group)
Data Analysis

▪ Researchers immerse themselves in the field notes, interview transcripts,

etc, to discover major themes that describe the group culture
Final Report

▪ Final report describes the researcher’s experience with thick, rich

description.
▪ Allows readers to experience the culture without having been there
▪ The report is usually written in a narrative, story – like fashion.
Limitations

▪ A lot of time in the field is required to understand a culture.

▪ The style of the final report may be difficult for those not used to writing
that way
▪ Researcher at risk for “going native” compromising duties as a researcher
▪ Researchers presence and potential lack of ethical consideration may
negatively impact the group of people
Conclusion

▪ Ethnography is qualitative research of a distinct group’s culture.

▪ After gaining access, data is primarily observations & interviews.
▪ Analysis includes discovering major themes from data that describe the
culture.
▪ The report is narrative with thick rich description of the culture.
▪ Limitations …. Time, report, “going native” & negative impact on group by
researcher
