NEUROPSYCHOLOGY
HEADING

• What is Neuropsychology
• The Brain
• Three major parts of brain
• Limbic system
• Four lobes of the brain
WHAT IS
NEUROPSYCHOLOGY?
• NEURO STANDS FOR NERVE AND NERVOUS SYSTEM.
• PSYCHOLOGY MEANS STUDY OF HUMAN MIND

Neuropsychology is a branch of psychology that is concerned with how a person’s cognition and
behavior are related to the brain and the rest of the nervous system.
Professsionals in this branch of psychology often focus on how injuries or illness of the brain
affect cognitive and behavioral functions.
THE BRAIN

• The brain is one of the largest and most complex organs in the human body.
It is made up of more then 100 billion nerves that communicate in trillions of connections called
synapses.

• The human brain is a unique and complex structure; it facilitates vital and complicated
physiological and psychological functions such as consciousness, mobility, emotion and
personality. Different parts of the brain are responsible for specific functions.

THREE MAJOR PARTS ARE:

(Forebrain)

(Midbrain)

(Hindbrain)
LIMBIC SYSTEM
H - Hypothalamus
A - Amygdala
T - Thalamus

HAT

Hippo

Hippocampus
HYPOTHALAMUS
Hypo mean “Below”, hypothalamus means below the thalamus. It is so small that it makes less than 1% of the total volume of your brain.

Functions:
• Regulating body temperature
• Maintaining daily physiological cycles
• Controlling appetite
• Regulating emotional response

Damage to hypothalamus:
• Body temperature fluctuation
• Lack of interest in activities
• Fatigue
• Weakness
• Loss of vision
• Frequent thirst
THALAMUS

Functions :
• It is a Sensory switchboard
• Regulates your sleep and wake
• Deals with Consciousness &
• Alertness

Damage Thalamus :
• Associated with risk of coma
• Sensory changes in body parts
• Movement disorder
AMYGDALA
Functions:
• Perception of emotions such as anger, fear and sadness
• Controlling of aggression.
• Helps to store memories of events and emotions.
• Associate with anxiety disorders, Alzheimer disease and depression.

Damage to amygdala:
• No amygdala No fear.
• Hypersexuality
• Hyperorality (Hungry)
HIPPOCAMPUS
Functions:
• Processing center of long term memory.
• Formation of new memories
• Helps to convert STM into your LTM
• These memories can evoke your emotions
aswell.

Damage to hippocampus:
• Difficulty in forming new memories
THE FOUR LOBES OF BRAIN

Frontal lobe
Parietal lobe
Occipital lobe
Temporal lobe
FRONTAL LOBES
Functions:
• Motor function
• Problem solving
• Positive Emotions (happiness, gratitude, satisfaction)
• Negative Emotions (anger, jealousy, pain sadness)
• Spontaneity
• Memory
• Language
• Judgement
• Impulse control

Damage to frontal lobe:

• Impairment in consciousness, movement, balance, sensation and cognition
• Impact on functioning, ability to be employed and disability.
PARIETAL LOBE

Functions:
• Process and integrate somatosensory,
that has to do with taste, temperature and touch
• Awareness of the location of body parts.

Damage to parietal lobe:

• Can cause visuo-spatial deficits (the patient may have difficulty finding their way around new or even familiar places)
• Difficulty with writing and mathematics.
• Produce disorder of language
• Inability to perceive objects.
TEMPORAL LOBE

Functions:
• Responsible for hearing, memory, meaning and
language
• Also play a role in emotion and learning.
• Concerned with interpreting and processing auditory
stimuli.

Damage to temporal lobe:

• Difficulty placing words or pictures into categories
• Language can be affected
• Disturb recognition of words
• Loss of inhibition of talking
OCCIPITAL LOBE
Functions:
• Vision processing
• Analyzing content such as shapes, colors and movement

Damage of occipital lobe:

• Difficulty in seeing objects or colors
• Hallucinations
• Blindness
• Inability to recognize written words and reading
• Visual inattention
