Structures &

Seismic
Mitigation:
Tokyo Sky-tree
By Anna Qin
The uses of Tokyo
Sky-tree

 Tokyo Skytree is a tower, it is the

primary television and radio
broadcast site for the Kantō
region. The older Tokyo Tower in
Kantō region is surrounded by
high-rise buildings; therefore, it is
no longer gives complete digital
terrestrial television broadcasting
coverage.
The structure of Tokyo
Skytree and how the
building earthquake proof
 The location of Tokyo Skytree is
very close to the coastline and
strong wind blows even on the
lowland. In order to build a 634
meters tall tower, senior structural
engineering, Atsuo Konishi and his
colleagues designed a steel truss
tower; instead of fighting against
the wind steel truss let the wind
pass through the gaps between
the trusses.

Skytree and how the
building earthquake proof
 Besides, normal buildings’ various
devises and damping method could
not be applied on this thin, tall
building. Atsuo Konishi and his team
used an ancient Japanese design
called Shinbashira to stabilize the
tower. Shinbashira is the flexible
central pillar of a Japanese pagoda
that build around 1000 years ago,
and it stabilizes the tired wooden
structure during an earthquake or
typhoon.
Ancient design combine
to modern design
 Instead using a wood central pillar,
the skytree engineering created a
375-meter-tall concrete core
column. The column connected to
the tower’s steel outer frame by a
series of flexible oil dampers
devices. During an earthquake and
typhoon, it sway in opposite
directions to reduce the vibration.
Earthquake-  Under the core column is six giant rubber
bearings and it will move horizontally to

resistant Isolator
support heavy concrete column during
earthquake.
The top part of
Skytree
 The top part of Skytree is a
broadcasting antenna. In order
to make the antenna stable
and ensure high quality, two
turned mass damper systems
were installed. When the tower
shakes, this two dampers act
together as reverse pendulums
to reduce vibrations that
caused by wind or an
earthquake.
The location of Tokyo
Skytree
 Tokyo Skytree, Sumida,
Tokyo, Japan is located at
Japan country in the
Towers place category with
the GPS coordinates of 35°
42' 36.2304'' N and 139° 48'
38.5164'' E.
