The Nano World

Chapter XIV
Nanotechnology

 Derived from the words nano, the billionth of a quantity and is

represented mathematically as 1x10-9 , and technology, the application
of scientific knowledge for society’s practical needs and improvements
 The new category of technology involving both basic and applied
research intersecting with the fields of computer science and
information technology, medical technology, agriculture, life sciences,
engineering, chemistry, physics, and mathematics
 Concerned with the world of ultraminute particles dominated by forces
of chemistry and physics that cannot be applied at human-scale level.
Nanotechnology
 Fast-growing area of science and research
 “General purpose technology” because of its global impacts and effects
 “Enabling technology” because it supports other technologies
 Include process that provides goods and/or services which are derived
from matter at the nanometer level
 Principles of engineering the structure of matter at the molecular level
 Research and technology development at the atomic, molecular, or
macromolecular levels in the length scale of approximately 1 to 100 nm
range, to provide a fundamental understanding of phenomena and
materials at the nanoscale and to create and use structures, devices, and
systems that have novel properties and functions because of their small
and/or intermediate size
Four Generations of Nanotechnology
 Passive Nanostructures – size + physical property
 Active Nanodevices – quantum properties
 Systems of Nanosystems – systems of nanodevices
 Molecular Nanosystems – molecular machines and
manufacture
