Distribution by age
Most children under 14 years of age are not affected by
STIs, other than by congenital syphilis, ophthalmia
neonatorum and HIV infection.
New STI cases begin to occur during adolescence and tend
to be most frequent in the 15–44 age group, decreasing in
older adults.
Distribution by sex
men and women are equally vulnerable to STIs. However,
cases occur: more frequently among females than males
between the ages of 14 and 19 years;
slightly more frequently among males than females over
the age of 19 years.
The higher frequency among females aged 14–19
years may be attributable to several factors:
• girls tend to have sex with older male partners, who have
more sexual experience and are more likely to carry
infections;
