Q1..What do you mean by demography and discuss the
importance of demography in business and commerce.
DEFINATION:
According to Hauser and Duncan (1972),
‘Demography is the study of the size, territorial
distribution and composition of population,
changes therein, and the composition of such
changes which may be identified as natality,
mortality, territorial movements and social
mobility (change of status)’.
IMPORTANCE OF DEMOGRAPHY:
1. City Planning: City planning includes urban and
rural management which needs data about relative
population their family data, food, water, land
occupation and consumption capacity, needed services,
educational background, income level etc.
2. Resource Management: Food, water and shelter are
the basic needs of any human being. After city
planning, providing all the services through resource
management is the prime concern of a various
administrative officers of a respective division.
3. Business Management: To establish any type of business,
any businessmen see whether that city or an area has a
potential for consumption of that product.
4. Service Management: As the city grows, it demands
various types of services else. it has been observed that due to
lack of some services, people have left those places and
migrated into another place where they get better services and
opportunity to grow in future.
5. Government Planning: GDP, GNP. NNP all like other
measures depends ultimately on population. After every ten
years, the government conduct censes survey which gives
heavy and numerous type of data which helps in every sector.
6. Environmental Planning: Despite India's robust economy
and democracy at present, India has experienced some of the
worst disasters in the history of the world in the form of famines,
earthquakes, cyclones, and tsunamis.
7. Disaster Management: Various types of natural disasters like
flood, drought, forest fire, earthquake and manmade disasters
like fire, major accidents, riots etc., are big threats to the lives
and properties of the people in the districts.
IMPORTANCE OF DEMOGRAPHY IN
BUSINESS AND COMMERCE :

Using this data, businesses can create marketing strategies

and governments can implement public policies.
Business owners are always looking for an edge in marketing
products and services to generate more revenue and profit
margins.
Demographics are a key factor in getting that edge.
