Setting

A travel narrative set primarily from Europe to

China and Southeast Asia, spanning the years
1260 to 1295
History

Venice was at war with Genoa when Marco returned,

and he took up arms and participated for his
motherland. He was eventually captured and
sentenced to a Genoese prison, where he met a
fellow prisoner and writer named Rustichello. Marco
narrated his tales of adventure to entertain everyone,
and the writer recorded these tales in French dialect
in 1298 to occupy his time.
Brief Summary
In 1260, Nicolo and Maffeo Polo, father and uncle of Marco respectively, went to
Constantinople to lookout for ways to expand economically and geographically. The two
went on a difficult journey to the east, where they met Kublai Khan, a Mongol ruler.
During their stay, Khan was interested in Christianity and sent a letter to the Pope
requesting 100 Vatican scholars and oil. They went to Acre but learned that the Pope was
dead. They returned to Venice, met his son for the first time, and waited until a new Pope
was made. They went back after two years and took Marco with them. They explored along
the Silk Road and successfully made it to Cathay (China) and stayed there for many years.
Khan was impressed by Marco’s intelligence and appointed him as a special envoy in
his court. He was sent to missions throughout the empire and Southeast Asia and worked
various jobs for 17 years. Finally, after being away for 24 years, they decided it was time to
return to Venice. They arrived, and people thought they were long dead. They have even
forgotten their native tongue. At that time, Venice was at war with Genoa. Marco joined the
war and was captured and imprisoned. There he met Rustichello, and they wrote his
travels.
