Definition :
• It is one of the most effective ways to learn strategic
management.
• It provides a complement to other methods of instruction
by asking you to use the tools and techniques of strategic
management to deal with an actual business situation
• It is a learning tool
• It simulates the real -world experience that strategic
managers and company leaders face as they try to
determine how best to run their companies

Dess, Gregory et.al.

So what for students ?
Approach to Case analysis is

A case study

Is a description of an actual administrative situation involving a decision

to be made or a problem to be solved. It can a real situation that actually
happened just as described, or portions have been disguised for reasons of
privacy.
Most case studies are written in such a way that the reader takes the
place of the manager whose responsibility is to make decisions to help solve
the problem. In almost all case studies, a decision must be made, although
that decision might be to leave the situation as it is and do nothing.
Uses :

• By studying the background and analyzing the strategic

predicaments posed by a case, you first see that the circumstances
business confront are often difficult and complex.
• Then you will be asked what decisions you would make to address
the situation in the case and how the actions you recommend will
affect the company.
• So, the processes of analysis, formulation and implementation that
have been addressed by the textbook can be applied ina real-life
situation
Why do we have to analyze
strategic management cases ?
• Why do some firms succeeded and others fail?
• Why are some companies higher performers than others ?
• What information is needed in the strategic management
process?
• How do competing values and beliefs affect strategic
decision making?
• What skills and capabilities are needed to implement a
strategy effectively?
How to do a case analysis?

Beforehand (usually a week before)

• you will get: the case study,

• (often) some guiding questions that will need to
be answered, and
• (sometimes) some reading assignments that
have some relevance to the case subject.
Your work in completing the case can be divided up
into components:
• What you do to prepare before you discuss your
case,
• How did you do your case/ some notes for
experiences
• Enumerate some hardships
• Weaknesses and strengths you experienced with
the case
For maximum effectiveness, it is essential that you
do all three components. These are :

Before the class discussion:

• Read the reading assignments (if any)
• Use the Short Cycle Process to familiarize yourself
with the case.
• Use the Long Cycle Process to analyze the case
• Usually there will be group meetings to discuss
your ideas.
• Write up the case (if required)
