Introduction

● Cradle to Cradle is a sustainable business strategy that mimics the

regenerative cycle of nature in which waste is reduced.

● Cradle-to-cradle is a design philosophy is developed by Michael Braungart

and William McDonough, They introduced in their book Cradle to Cradle —
Remaking the Way We Make Things.

● Every product is part of a perpetual cycle, in which it is reused and preserves

or increases its value. Upcycling instead of downcycling.

In practical terms, C2C requires products to be designed in such a way to ensure

that all materials can be classified into one of two cyclical systems
Biological cycle
● Materials that naturally biodegrade and can be returned to the ecological
system. Examples of such materials are natural fibres and bio plastics.
Technology cycle
● Metals, oil-based plastics and chemicals are examples of valuable materials
that can be recycled or reused producing the same or better quality in closed
systems, provided they are not mixed.

Examples
Refillable Packaging – Coca Cola
Coca-Cola recently announced that by the end of the decade, it will sell a quarter
of its drinks in refillable packaging. If we buy a bottle of Coke or Fanta in
Brazil, it might come in a “universal bottle.” Ideally we would take that reusable
plastic bottle, designed to be used by multiple Coca-Cola brands, and return it to
the store. Customers get a discount each time they bring the bottles back, an
incentive that means the bottles are reused an average of 25 times.

Less, Better, No plastic framework - Unilever

• In France, Signal has launched a toothbrush with a replaceable head. It uses a
metal handle, PCR material in the replaceable heads and reduces virgin plastic
by 95%.
• Lipton brand has started a programme to make all its tea bags globally from
plant-based materials. This means they will be fully renewable and
compostable, going back to nature where they came from, thereby reducing our
environmental impact.
