FACTS ‘BOUT FOOD CHAINS
 Food chains can link together to form food webs.
 In a food chain, energy is passed from one link to another.
 In a food chain, each species occupies a certain position in
the chain.
 Green plants, and some kinds of bacteria, are the most
important producers.
How Do Food Chains Work?
 Plants get energy from the sun which is
called photosynthesis
 An animal eats the plants and receives
nutrients from the plant.
 The animal is eaten by an even bigger
animal and so on until it reaches the top
of the food chain.
 The top animal eventually dies which
fertilizes the ground.
 The fertilized ground grows plants which
receives energy from the sun and the
process starts all over again.

Tips to identify Food Chains

How to identify a food web or chain.

 How do you identify a food chain?

 A food chain only follows just one path as animals find food. eg: A hawk eats a
snake, which has eaten a frog, which has eaten a grasshopper, which has eaten
grass. A food web shows the many different paths plants and animals are
connected. eg: A hawk might also eat a mouse, a squirrel, a frog or some other
animal.
Preys & Predators
 What are preys? Preys are organisms that a predator kills
for food.
 What are Predators?  Predators are animals that hunt, kill
and eat other animals for food.
Survival in the Wild
Predators have one outspoken rule and that
is “Eat or be eaten”. It means that it is every
animal for itself.
There are no friends in the wild, but some
animals have allies like birds, snakes,
elephants, etc.
Take a look at the example beside this. A
dog catching and eating a fish.
 Now that we’ve learnt about food chains, if you have any questions whatsoever,
ask them now. That is the end of the powerpoint.
