ESTIMATION OF Ni+2 BY BACK TITRATION METHOD

Aim: To estimate the amount of Ni+2 by

using back titration method.

Apparatus: 1.Conical flask

2.Beakers 3.Funnels 4.Burette
5.Pippete 6.Measuring jars
7.Waterbath 8.Whatman filterpaper.
Chemicals :
1.EDTA solution
2.pH = 10 Buffer solution
3. EBT indicator
4.MgSO4 solution
5. Ni+2 solution
Principle:
Back Titrations:
1. This is method, an excess of standard EDTA is added
to the sample solution of metal ion.
2. The resulting solution will contain unreacted EDTA
which is then back titrated with standard metal ion
solution in the presence of indicator.
3. ZnCl2 , ZnSO4 , MgCl2 , MgSO4 is used as standard
metal ion solution.
4.Al+3, Co+2, Pb+2 , Mn+2 , Hg+2 , and Ni+2 can be determined
by using Back titration method.
PRINCIPLE:
pH = 10 buffer
Ni+2+ EDTA-2 [ Ni– EDTA]
Procedure:
In the detemination of Ni+2 following three
are involved.
1. Preparation of standard
MgSO4 .7H2Osolution.
2. Standadisation of given EDTA solution.
3.Estimation of Ni+2 solution
1. Preparation of standard MgSO4 .7H2Osolution.
0.01M MgSO4 .7H2O solution is prepared by
dissolving 0.246g of MgSO4 in 100ml water.

2. Standadisation of given EDTA
1.The Burette
solution. is filled with given EDTA solution.
2.10ml of standard MgSO4 solution is Pipetted out
and transferred in to a clean conical flask.
3.Then 5 ml of pH=10 buffer and 3 drops of EBT
indicator is added ,solution changed to violet colour .
4.Then it is titrated with the EDTA solution taken in
the Burette till the colour changed to blue.
5.This is repeated till the concurrent values are
