CDMA Modular Cell as a Growth Cell to Series II
 Co-location is targeted for CDMA 16.0
 Two colocation features:
• Software co-location (required)
• Hardware co-location (optional)
 Software co-location allows the 2 cells to seem as one to the
mobile. Cells still appear as 2 to the MSC.
 Hardware co-location allows hardware sharing
• RF Antennas
• GPS Antenna
• Power
 Advantages to growth with Modular Cell
• Supports maximum number of carriers for high volume areas
• Compact footprint
• Graceful migration to 3G 5MHz services, no additional cabinet

• Voice privacy / SME
• Packet Pipe 16 and Packet Pipe Optimization
• EFLOCA (Enhanced Forward Link Overload Control Algorithm) - short term
bursts of higher power
 Modular Cell feature parity FOA 6/00 (ECP 15.1)
 Growth Frame w/ 4-6 carrier: targeted for 15.1 (FOA April /
May 2000)
 Software co-location targeted for 16.0

FLEXENTTM cdmaOne Modular Cell Configurations

•The AP provides the radio control for the cell (same function as
RCC in PCS Minicell)
•One RCS software instance per Modular Cell (independent of #
of sectors / cell)
•One AP Pair can support 16 RCS (16 Modular Cells)
•Number of Modular Cell carriers supported depends on the
maximum BHCA, number of soft handoffs per call

Sept-99 Lucent Technologies

Lucent Technologies - Proprietary Bell Labs Innovations
21
AP Engineering Guidelines
 Assuming 3 soft handoffs per call, AP Pair capacity is 65K BHCA.
At 5 handoffs per call, capacity is 42K BHCA.
 Modular Cell maximum BHCA is 2K per 3-sector carrier
 Example calculations:

Configuration Total BHCA

16 3-sector, 2-carrier cells 16 cells X 2K BHCA X 2 carriers
= 64 BHCA
11 3-sector, 3-carrier cells 11 cells X 2K BHCA X 3 carriers
= 66 BHCA
16 3-sector, 1-carrier cells 16 cells X 2K BHCA
= 32 BHCA

Sept-99 Lucent Technologies

Lucent Technologies - Proprietary Bell Labs Innovations
22
AP Engineering Rules
 Two important rules to remember
• Cannot have more than 16 Modular Cells (16 RCS instances) per AP Pair
• Must be careful not to exceed maximum BHCA for the AP Pair
 Release 14.1 Features that APC can support:
• 4 AP Pairs per AP Frame
• 3 AP Frames per MSC
• This means a maximum of 16 X 4 X 3 or 192 Modular Cells per MSC
