Unit III: Artists and

Artisans
Artisan and the Guilds

Before we discuss this lesson,

let’s differentiate first these
terms: Artist and Artisan.
What is an Artist?
Artist is the one who produced any
manifestation of artistic arts. The unique
specialty of artists is to visualize the
unpredictable imaginations that only
some person can do in a form of artistic
works.
Kinds of artist
There are many different kinds of artists, and each uses a different medium to express
themselves. They often bring their particular style and point of view to the works they
produce. Some examples of artists are
painters,
photographers,
sculptors,
calligraphers,
illustrators,
printmakers,
and graphic designers.
They may produce art as a hobby for their personal use, or they may be hired to work as a
professional artist. Some artists focus on a specific medium or style, but art tends to be a fluid
form of expression, so many artists cross over into different forms of art.
What is an Artisan?
They are skilled workers involved in
skilled trade using their bare hands
in making things or materials. An
artisan is able to produce something
that has a functional value.
Types of Artisans
• the Artisan Promoter (ESTP),
• Artisan Crafter (ISTP),
• Artisan Performer (ESFP),
• and Artisan Composer (ISFP)
Difference Between Artists & Artisans
Artists and artisans articulate a vision through their art or
craft. Fine artists work with paint, watercolor, pen and ink, or
illustrations, while artisans craft work like jewelry, glasswork,
pottery or other functional products. Artists focus on creating
aesthetically pleasing works, while artisans' work focuses on
accessorizing and functionality more than aesthetics. The
work of artists tends to be shown in museums or galleries,
while artisans sell their crafts at fairs and shops.
Artist
All fine artists first learn to sketch, and begin with a pencil and sketchpad to work
with an idea on paper. Artists transfer their visions to canvases or other medium,
and this may mean working in oil, watercolor or pastels. Sculptors take their
sketches and create 3D products from clay, marble or other material. Illustrators
might work for a publishing or animation company, or create original comic
books. All artists' work aims to create an overall reaction from a viewer.
• Job responsibilities of an Artist include:
• Developing ideas for a canvas or product
• Selecting a medium for a final work, including texture, size, or area
• Collecting work for a portfolio
• Applying for grants for financial support
Artisan
Artisans are craftsmen who make practical artistic products, such as earrings, urns,
stained glass and other accessories. Artisans gain their knowledge by studying
under master craftsmen and then practicing with continued study. Artisans work to
create something new, original, and at times, provocative. They spend a good
portion of their time selling and promoting their items in various marketplaces.
• Job responsibilities of an Artisan include:
• Using and mixing mediums like paint, metal, glass, or fabric
• Shaping, gluing, sewing, testing and producing products
• Displaying work at various sites including auctions, craft shows or online markets
• Estimating costs and material needs

•In this lesson, we will look at some
famous artists and artisans and the
mediums and techniques they used
in creating artworks. Some players
involved in the production of artwork
will recognize their roles as well.
Have you asked yourself why a lot of artistic and imaginative
productions of arts are still alive today? Some historical artifacts
are being preserved in a museum all over the world for us to
perceive.

Spectacular structures are being appreciated for their historical

significance and also for the decorative characteristics that make
them unique. The most interesting part was the medium,
materials, and techniques behind the production of the
masterpiece.
In Germany, one of the great examples of early
Gothic architecture was Cologne Cathedral. The
best account or reference for this was the famous
mason master Gerhard Ryle who started the
project in 1248 but was finished in 600 years,
claiming the record as one of the longest
construction projects in history.

• During the middle Ages, to qualify as a craft guild, skills are
needed for an apprentice to register. They are common
during this era where they formalized groups of artisans or
craft men who became shoemakers, textile and glass workers,
carpenters, carvers, masons, armorers, and weapon-makers.
• The practices of artisans are not based on their individual
capabilities and success but rather they have a commitment
to work together as one. The Guilds were a type of social
fellowship, an association structured with rules, customs,
rights, and responsibilities.

•Another famous artist during this era was
Albrecht Dürer. He was a painter and a
printmaker. He was known as the greatest
German Renaissance artist. His artworks
include altarpieces and religious works,
plentiful portraits and self-portraits, and
copper engraving.

• When the Spaniards propagate the faith, the friars order
a lot of artisans to paint , carve and engrave images for
churches and public sites. The church of the Most Holy
Trinity in Loay, Bohol is one of the examples of the
churches made by artisans.

• During the Middle Ages until the Renaissance, artists also
emerged and became very popular in this era. A lot of craftsmen
transformed into artists. Numerous secular arts are made but
before Renaissance time, plenty of artworks were left unsigned.
• The artists claimed their authorship in every masterpiece they
created. As of today, artist studios were one of the most
fascinating and interesting in public. The studio model dates
back to the Renaissance. Artist flexed their relationship with
their patron as a site where negotiations and works were made.

Other Players in the World of Art
• The figure presented is the Prominent Roles in the
Art World with Their Mandatory Relationship. In
the last 100 years, some roles have existed since
the births of art history were properly interacted
with legitimized names into a modern network
which we called the “art world”.

Roles of some players in Art
In administrative or managerial roles, these two are
present in either institutional or non-institutional
situations. These roles maybe break down into working
boards (board of trustees); directors and assistant
directors; managing curators; and other positions that
have functions on management and operations of
museums, galleries, and another art world.
The Curator
The word “curator” comes from the Latin word
curare, which means “to take care”. The
Institutional curators are devoted to museums
and galleries, while independent or freelance
curators have the freedom to move around
diverse platforms, projects, and art spaces in a
multiplicity of terms.

Gallery in London.
The Buyers and Collectors
Buyers are those who assess and inspect artworks
that collectors are highly interested in.
Supervising the sale of the artwork is their role as
well. Buyers and collectors are people who obtain
and purchase artworks for some reasons like
appreciation and enjoyment of art or for
investment.
Art Dealers
They are the ones who distribute, circulate,
and promote the artworks such as direct
sales, or through galleries. Art dealers control
the advertising and organizing exhibits for an
artist for a commission at the sale of the
work.
Art Critics
They evaluate, analyze, and interpret the
importance and purity of the artwork
presented at museums, galleries, and
private or public shows. Critics also give
judgment and comments and artistic
expressions of the art being reviewed.
Artist’s Medium and Technique
The medium as one of the strands in the art that
describes the composition and the finality features
of the masterpiece. It is the mode of expression in
which the concept, idea, or messages were shared.
These are in a form of substantial or concrete
artworks such as monuments, sculptures, paintings,
and structures.
• A chosen medium must not be expected to yield the same
results. Giving two different artists the same exact material
and the general qualifier of “painting”, the end product will
still vary minimally or on an exponential scale.

• This is where technique comes in, as it is the reason why art

history is described by a seemingly limitless example of works
of art.  The technique of the artwork shows the level of
familiarity with the medium being manipulated.
Awards and Citations
If you have passion, love and productivity in what you
are doing, obtaining courtesy or respect from your
colleagues in the world of art, maybe you will be
nominated for awards and citations. The two major
awards given to artists in the Philippines are the Orden
ng Pambansang Alagad ng Sining (Order of National
Artists) and Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan ( National
Living Treasures Award.
The very first award was painter Fernando Amorsolo,
who was proclaimed as the “ Grand Old Man of
Philippine Art”. He was the sole awardee in the year
1972, a National Artist for Visual Arts. Recently, there
are 66 awardees of this reputable honor in different
art forms. The Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan or the
National Living Treasures Award was created in 1992
under the Republic Act No. 7355.
