Deriving Quadratic

Function from tables

Objectives:
•Given a table representing a
quadratic function, find
function represented.
Consider the quadratic function f given by
f(x)=+4. The table shows the values of f(x) for
some consecutive values of x and their first and
second differences.

Let the quadratic function f be of the form y =
where a, b and c are to be determined. Let us
consider any 3 ordered pairs (x, y) from the table.
Let us take (1, 5), (3, 19) and (4, 29).
Equation 1:
Equation 2:
Equation 3:
We obtain a system of linear equations in 3
unknowns a, b and c.
(1): 5 = a + b + c
(2): 19 = 9a + 3b + c
(3): 29 = 16a + 4b + c
