Problem Description: A bicycle wrench shown below is made of stainless steel with a Young’s
modulus of 193 GPa and a Poisson’s ratio of 0.27. The wrench is 2 mm thick. Using ANSYS
Workbench, determine the location and magnitude of the maximum deformation and the maximum
von Mises stress under the given load and boundary conditions.

Plate/Shell Problems

Plate geometry: l =400 mm, height h=100 mm, thickness b=10 mm.

Material: mild steel having Young’s modulus E =210 GPa and Poisson’s ratio ν=0.3.

Elliptic hole: An elliptic hole has a minor radius of 5mmin the longitudinal direction and a major radius of 10mm in the transversal
direction.

Boundary conditions: The elastic plate is subjected to a uniform tensile load of 10 Mpa in the longitudinal direction at the right end and
clamped to a rigid wall at the left end.
Plate/Shell Problems

A combination wrench is a convenient tool that is used to apply torque to loosen or tighten a fastener. The wrench shown below is made of
stainless steel and has a thickness of 3 mm. Determine the maximum deformation and the distribution of von Mises stresses under the given
distributed load and boundary conditions

• Problem Description: The following figure shows a simple bracket made of structural steel with Young’s
modulus E = 200 GPa and Poisson’s ratio ν = 0.3. The bracket has a cross-section profile shown below and an
extrusion depth of 12 cm. A through-hole of diameter 1.5 cm is centered on the bracket’s flat ends, one on
each side, as shown in the figure. Suppose that the bracket is fixed on the bottom, and lifted by a pressure load
of 1000 N/cm2 from the inside surface of the top flat portion. Compute the deformation and stresses in the
bracket using the FEA.
