Savvy

Setting
The Beaumonts jokingly call where they live Kabraska/Nebransas. This is because they
live on the border of Kansas and Nebraska, which is in the middle of the nowhere. They
choose it because it's far from water so that Fish stops creating hurricanes.
The second setting is the Heartland Bible Supply Bus, which is a pink bus delivering
bibles. Most of the story takes place there. The whole group sneaks on the bus for their
adventure to save Poppa. where they are forced to interact and become friends by working
together.
Characterization
Mibs is the main character. She is on a mission to save her dad after his car accident. Her
full name is Mississippi Beaumont. She is tall with hazel eyes and brown straw colored
hair. She recently turned thirteen years old. When she did, she got her savvies, which is
when her family usually gets their special power. She does not have many friends because
shE is always trying to hide her family secret. Two days before her birthday, she discovers
that her father got into a car accident and her savvy might be able to save him. She is both
brave and stubborn because she leaves home to try and save her father even though she is
not sure if her savvy can even save him.
Plot
Savvy written by Ingrid Law is a story of a girl named Mibs and on her thirteenth birthday
she gets a special power. Two days before her birthday her Poppa gets into a car accident
and slips into a coma. The morning of her birthday Mibs believes that her savvy will be
the ability to wake things up so she sneaks onto the church bus to try to get to her father.
With her brothers and friends, Will, Fish, Bobbi, and Samson, they go and adventure
across the country. Along the way Mibs learns that her savvy is really the ability to hear
people's thoughts by touch ink or tattoos on their body. The story ends with the police
catching up to them and Mib being taken to her dad where she talks to him though his
tattoo and he wakes up.
Character change
In the beginning of the book Mibs is insecure. She is so worried about keeping her family
secret she keeps herself separate from everyone. She assumes that no one is going to like
her, she even tells the preacher's wife, Mrs. Rosemary, “I don't have any friends Mrs.
Rosemary” (chapter 4) when she wants to throw her a birthday party. By the end of the
book Mibs realizes that if she gives people a chance to get to know her they will not only
like her, despite her differences, they will love her for her differences.

FAMILY SECRETS
Author’s purpose
The author’s purpose is to entertain. It is a funny and magical book that can never happen.
Therefore, she was trying to make it interesting by adding twists in the plot. Its seen in the
book when the bus is going the wrong way and then they get caught or when she finds out
that her savvy isn’t what she expected.
Theme
A major theme shown throughout the book is that family comes first. Its shown when
Mibs, Fish and Samson sneak onto the Heartland Bible supply bus, to try to go to their
Poppa in the. Mibs works hard to keep the family secret.

Another theme is the power of friendship and is shown throughout the book because as
mibs spends time with Will jr. and Bobbi. They had to stick together, be loyal and work
together to protect each other and later Will Jr. develops feeling for her.
Symbolism
One of the best examples of symbolism is the angel. Three different times the idea of an
angel comes up. The first is when Mibs sees the “smiling angel air freshener dangling in
the front window” of the preacher’s wife’s van. Mibs feels uncomfortable around this
angel because the smile seems fake. The second angel is the tattoo on Bobbie’s back. In
the beginning Mabs doesn't even like Bobbie but by the end they become friends. “The
tattoo was a picture of a little angel with a golden halo and outstretched wings, only this
angel had a devilish grin and a pointed read tail to match.” The third angel we encounter is
lil who represent comfort and acts like the mom of the group. Mibs calls her a real angel.
(one with really big feet.)
Award
The John Newbery Award is a literary award given by the Association of Library Service
to Children to the author of “the most distinguished contribution to american literature of
children.” Savvy was nominated for the award because it has a first person narrative that
draws readers into a wild and interesting bus ride. It also teaches the reader many
important lessons that relate to the readers such as: trusting yourself accepting yourself for
who you are, and believing you can do anything. In the beginning of the story mibs is all
alone and has no friends, she doesn’t even want a birthday party. When she finds out her
Pappa is hurt in an accident she is willing to sneak away to save him. Along the way she
learns to believe in herself and that letting people in isn’t always such a bad thing.
Recommendation
I would recommend this book to readers. It was a very unique book about magic and
friendship. I enjoyed reading about a world where people had savvies and i can relate to
the relationship mibs had with her brothers when she found them annoying because i also
have brothers who at times can be annoying. I found the book very interesting and it was
an amazing adventure to read about.
