What is Copyright?
How is it different from Fair Use?
Copyright Fair Use
+ Copyright protects the + Fair Use gives us the ability

+ You are the Art teacher, and you are teaching a unit on Pablo
Picasso. You have a wonderful art book that you copy the
Picasso Blue Period pictures from to add to your Picasso power
pt. How many images can you copy and use from the book?
A. 5 B. as many as you want C. 10 D. 1

+ The answer is D. 1
+ Did you choose D. 1?
+ You are correct! You can only use 1 image per book, magazine,
periodical, including encyclopedias.
+ And yes, you cite the book as your source!
#2. What would you do?

+ You are the U.S. History teacher, and you want to use the
photographs of Walker Evans in your presentation on the
Depression. His photographs show the true impact of the
depression. How many Walker Evans photographs can you use
in your presentation?
A. as many as you want B. 5 C. 1 D. 10
#2. What would you do?

+ B. 5
+ You can use up to 5 images created by the same person.
+ If it is a collection, you can use up to 15 images or 10%,
whichever is less.
+ And yes, site the source!
#3. What would you do?

+ You are the Biology teacher, and you are teaching the cell unit.
You have an awesome drawing of a cell that you want to use for
students to recreate. You only use half the original image for
students to draw and label the missing half.
A. You can use half the image. B. No, you can’t do this.

+ B. No, you can’t do this.


+ You cannot make changes to images.
+ So, control that Snipping Tool!
+ Don’t cover those copyright banners embedded in images!

+ No more than 1 image per book or periodical.


+ No more than 5 images per creator.
+ Do not change an image.
+ And please cite your sources!
